“Thank you all for the many ways you embody and live the values of social work every day, whether it’s through your teaching, your research, or the work you do in practice, all of it advances dignity, it also advances equity and care in ways that matter deeply and in ways that reverberate.”

Meredith Slopen, PhD, MSW, Receives the Upjohn Institute Early Career Research Award
We are proud to celebrate Meredith Slopen, PhD, MSW, assistant professor, for being awarded the prestigious Early Career Research Award from the W.E. Upjohn Institute for Employment Research. Dr. Slopen is one of 10 researchers selected from around the world to receive awards worth $7,500 each.
Slopen’s project, “Can New Paid Sick Leave Laws Reach Excluded Workers and Support Older Workers to Stay Employed, Economically Secure, and Meet Retirement Goals?”, examines how job security and workplace flexibility serve as critical components of job quality — particularly for individuals navigating health and caregiving challenges.
Her research highlights the importance of policies that strengthen workforce attachment, especially in light of newly passed work requirements impacting adults over age 55.
The Upjohn Institute’s 2026 Early Career Research Awards support innovative scholars investigating key workforce and policy issues, including paid leave and access to employment opportunities.

2nd-Year, MSW Part-Time Program
Specialization: Integrated Health: Physical, Psychological, and Social Well Being
Agency Name and Location: Family Service League Family Shelter, Brentwood, NY
Practicum responsibilities: "I am a case manager at the Family Service League Brentwood Shelter. I work with families to achieve their goals, which typically fall into the realm of employment, healthcare, and permanent housing.
"This opportunity has taught me so much about what it means to meet the client where they are at and to approach each situation with cultural humility and empathy. Working with the same families every week allows me to build meaningful working relationships with our clients and has allowed me to gain a deeper understanding of the complex challenges they face, while also recognizing their resilience and strengths.
"My work as a case manager has strengthened my ability to take a holistic, person-centered approach, adapt to individual needs, and provide support in a way that is both respectful and empowering. The staff has been incredibly welcoming, making me feel like a valued member of the team while generously sharing their knowledge.
