Remembering Captain Jack Casey

The STA community mourns the loss of Captain Jack Casey, St. Thomas Aquinas High School Class of 2015 alumnus. Jack and four fellow Marines were tragically involved in a helicopter accident during a routine training exercise on February 7, 2024.

Jack had a profound impact on those who knew and loved him, and we recognize the immense loss in our community. He made the ultimate sacrifice defending our nation’s freedoms and we come together in honoring his memory.

He was an exceptional student during his time at St. Thomas Aquinas which translated to his career in the United States Marine Corps. Jack’s courage and commitment to serve our country and fight for our nation’s freedoms, epitomizes the values in our school community.

We ask you keep the Casey family, friends, and fellow Marines in your hearts and in your prayers during this incredibly difficult time.
Andy Watson '09
Andy Watson ’09 has travelled all over the world since his graduation from STA. 15 years later, this Marine Corps Aviator is back in New Hampshire before taking off for his next adventure in the Lone Star State.

Hailing from Amesbury, MA, Andy chose St. Thomas Aquinas High School because he was looking for a more academically rigorous opportunity. It was here where he was not only challenged in the classroom, but also found a great community and life-long friendships. In addition to his heavy courseload of classes like AP Physics and AP Calculus, Andy made time for sports, activities, and fun. Named “Most Spirited” by his classmates, this Scholar Athlete served as a captain on the football team and a leader on the Student Advisory Board.

Andy attended Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute on a NROTC scholarship, graduating in 2013 with a degree in Industrial and Management Engineering. He commissioned into the United States Marine Corps, where he served for 9 years, primarily as a helicopter instructor pilot stationed in San Diego, CA. His time in the Marines took him to Asia, the Middle East, Africa, and South America.

Interview with a Holocaust Survivor
Seniors in Mr. Tim Holmes' English class, "Holocaust Literature: Resistance and Survival," had the unique opportunity to listen to a live interview of Holocaust survivor, Ninetta Matsa Feldman, presented by the US Holocaust Memorial Museum.

Born in Arta, Greece in 1938, Ninetta was just 5 years old when her family fled their home city and relocated to the mountain village of Psilovrachos to escape German occupation. During their time there, they escaped German patrols twice and faced winter on the brink of starvation. Approximately 126 of her family were killed in Auschwitz. To learn more about Ninetta's story, click the link below.

Ninetta's powerful testimony is one of many moving stories this class has focused on this semester to examine what may be the darkest, most gruesome event in human history. Through literature-based witness and testimony, the class engages in and honors the past, while simultaneously reckoning with the present to ensure that what has been done will never be done again.
From the mountains of Peru, to the tropics of Coasta Rica, to the green hills of Ireland, and back home on the Seacoast, Winterterm 2024 has given our students a chance to step outside the classroom to challenge their mind, support their passions, and transform their perceptions of learning.

This year's Winterterm course of studies offered students a pedagogical palette of colorful learning opportunities. In addition to international service trips, students at home explored a variety of subjects, such as "Adventures in Biomedical Engineering," "Sports in Film," "Life Skills 101," and much more. Many students also participated in community service projects around the Seacoast. Follow us on social media for more pictures from our Winterterm Adventures!
30 students and 4 faculty/staff headed to beautiful Coasta Rica. White water rafting on the famous Sarapiqui River, Costa Rican cuisine, fresh squeezed natural sugar cane juice, and a cooking class are just a snapshot of their adventures!
Students in the "Serving the Seacoast" Winterterm class performed served individuals at the soup kitchen at Lazarus House (Lawrence, MA), completed cleaning projects at the NHSPCA, made baked good for Dover Children's Home, and collected 30 lbs of trash at Shorts Sands Beach in York through Blue Ocean Society at Short Sands (York, Maine).
We were also fortunate to welcome back STA alum as Winterterm instructors.

STA’s Robotics team, the RoboSaints, helps students learn and develop engineering, computer programming, critical thinking, leadership, and teamwork skills. Founded in 2004, the goal of the team is to provide students with opportunities to apply their academic training to solve real-life technical challenges. It does more than just focus on STEM subjects. According to Dan Lowry ’25, the team’s President, “we’re basically running a small business.” They have redesigned their branding, coded their website and robot, developed a business plan, and worked on marketing. “There’s something for everyone,” said Dan. The team also engages in fundraising efforts to raise funds for tools, parts, and other items needed to compete,. Recently, they received an in-kind gift of equipment and a charitable gift from the Manchester-based company Allegro MicroSystems.

The team competed this year at the FIRST Robotics Competition. This year’s challenge is to build a robot from scratch that can pick up “notes” (which are discs/frisbees) and score them in a variety of different places, high and low. The team was runner up of the “Battle of the Bay” at Prospect Mountain High School in Alton this past fall.
STA Lenten Challenge
The Lenten season is a 40 day period that prepares us to celebrate the joy of the Lord’s Resurrection at Easter. The three pillars of Lent are: Prayer, Fasting, and Almsgiving. These challenge us to fervently pursue the Lord and call us to ponder how we can live out the STA mission of faith, service, justice, and moral leadership in all that we do.

On Ash Wednesday, we launched the first STA Lenten Challenge to help us practice the three pillars through a variety of activities offered by Campus Ministry and Student Life in preparation for the Easter celebrations. We invite you to join us in this journey.
We value the many skills of our alumni network and would welcome you to get involved! Please take a moment to complete our volunteer interest form and someone from our Alumni Office will reach out.
