U.S. SEC Picks First Woman of Color to Lead Enforcement

The U.S. Securities and Exchange Commission on Thursday named former federal prosecutor Alex Oh as its new head of enforcement, the first woman of color to lead the division, which plays a crucial role in policing U.S. financial markets. The appointment of Oh, a native of Seoul who moved to Maryland when she was 11, is the first big move under Chair Gary Gensler and comes amid a diversity push by President Joe Biden's administration.

FINRA announced today that it has promoted Stephanie Dumont, formerly Senior Vice President and Director of Capital Markets Policy for FINRA's Office of General Counsel, to the role of Executive Vice President and Head of Market Regulation and Transparency Services, effective immediately. Dumont will report to President and CEO Robert W. Cook and join FINRA’s Management Committee.

Women in Financial-Services C-Suite Rose 10% in Past Five Years

The number of women holding executive-level positions in the financial-services industry has increased by 10% in the five years ended Dec. 31, 2020, according to BoardEx, a data and analytics firm. In 2021, women held 11% of all C-suite roles, according to BoardEx’s analysis of 1,229 publicly traded U.S. financial institutions, which it shared with Barron’s. In 2016, they held 10% of those roles.

BOE, FCA Among Finance Institutions to Miss Gender Targets

The Bank of England and Financial Conduct Authority were among dozens of organizations that missed targets to choose more women for senior roles in Britain last year. Forty-four organizations including Lloyds Banking Group Plc and UBS Group AG fell short on pledges made under the U.K. Treasury’s Women in Finance Charter.
