FROM THE PRESIDENT
Dear St. Teresa's Academy Community,

Welcome to the close of our first semester and the dawn of Advent and the Christmas season! We have so many reasons to be filled with gratitude, and this time of the year makes it all the more appropriate to pause and reflect. Faculty, staff, and students have worked very hard on a wide range of projects this semester. Whether it be coursework studies, drama performances, sports participation, or service and leadership activities in the community, our students have engaged in meaningful endeavors to encourage their growth. Through it all, I have been incredibly impressed to witness how the St. Teresa‘s Academy community has been very collaborative and compassionate each and every day.

I am excited to announce our new technology adoption that will begin rolling out in early spring. Our Technology Department, in collaboration with the St. Teresa's Academy Technology Committee, teachers, and student pilot testers, have decided to recommend the new Dell 7400 2-in-1 laptop as the next student device for classroom and home use . The Academy is at the forefront in helping students excel with technology in the classroom and beyond. Students who join St. Teresa‘s Academy’s Technology Department Support Team have the opportunity to become Dell certified and can learn even more valuable, distinctive skills.

In January, our current Diversity and Inclusion Director, Brianna Walker, and Diversity Coordinator, Kelly McKee, will be increasing their diversity, equity, and inclusion work in our community. We are a community of learners that must heighten our consistent, ongoing attention to our values. Our charism of loving the dear neighbor without distinction is of supreme importance.

Interim Week promises to be an exciting time of innovative thinking and experiential learning. All of the courses have been developed in accordance with St. Teresa’s Academy’s core beliefs. Some of the courses include “Feminism and Disney,” “Kansas City Perspectives,” “Quilting Workshop, “eCybermission, “Theology and the Media,” “Shakespeare and the Stage,” “Yoga,” just to name a few. Our teachers have a deep commitment to our mission of educating, encouraging, and empowering our young women; thus, all the Interim Week courses reflect this focus.

Christmas time is a blessed time to reflect and welcome the Prince of Peace into our hearts and minds. For every joy and challenge we face, we must always remember to seek Christ’s peace. “May the Lord of Peace, Christ, give you peace always in every way. (2 Thessalonians 3:16)

I am both excited and comforted by the hardworking students, faculty, and staff of our school, as well as so grateful for our parents, Board of Trustees members, and alumnae. Thank you for sharing your gifts and prayers with St. Teresa’s Academy. May God bless each of you in the coming new year of 2020!

Wishing God’s Peace to All,
Dr. Siabhan May-Washington

A Night to Shine Auction Update
Generous Supporters Shattered Records at the A NIGHT TO SHINE Auction
An enormous amount of gratitude goes out to all the wonderful supporters of the A NIGHT TO SHINE Auction. Under the magical lighting and tropical decor of the transformed Goppert Gym, Auction guests enthusiastically bid, ate, and mingled the night away.

The giving STA community crushed previous Fund-a-Future records, while helping deserving students qualifying for financial need. This year's Fund-a-Future effort raised over $226,000, capturing the matching gift offered by an inspiring anonymous donor.

The bidding frenzy began with the Sisters of St. Joseph of Carondelet, who raised their paddle to donate $25,000 to Fund-a-Future. The Sisters provided one great example (of many) of loving the dear neighbor!

The success of the A NIGHT TO SHINE Auction would not be possible without the dedicated committee members, volunteers, sponsors, donors, and supporters giving so generously to STA.

Special appreciation goes to the tireless efforts of the Auction Chairs: Tatia (Anderson, ’91) & Josh Batz, Maribeth (Tabije, ’92) & Andrew Colombo, Kathy (Lisson, ’91) & John Schirger, and Pam (Grasser, ’92) & Scott Thompson.

If you attended the A NIGHT TO SHINE Auction, your input can help in the planning of future auctions. Please click below to take a quick survey to provide your impressions of the evening. Your feedback is valued!

Interim Week: January 8-10, 2020
St. Teresa’s Academy is excited to host Interim Week 2020!

Launched in 2019, St. Teresa’s Academy’s Interim Week, is a time of innovation, creation, and discovery as students step outside of traditional classrooms and participate in experiential learning. STA teachers have created exploratory, hands on, and interactive courses specifically developed to expose students to new ideas, experiences, and environments with the goal of fostering a pursuit of knowledge that will help students broaden their appreciation and awareness for the world in which we live.

This year we have added a host of unique and thought-provoking experiences, including new corporate and community partnerships, and student-led courses. These exciting new opportunities include:

  • Women in Finance with American Century Inc.
  • Design Thinking with Barkley Advertising
  • World Dance with City in Motion
  • Living Lightly: the Philosophy and Practice of Nomadic Living
  • Car Maintenance for the College Bound Teen

We invite you to click here to see the full catalogue of innovative course offerings.

School attendance policies apply to Interim Week dates. All students are expected to report to their course locations at 8:15 a.m. and will be dismissed at 2:30 p.m. each of the three days. Students remaining on campus may bring lunch or purchase Bistro lunch.

Field experiences are included in many courses. Please check with your daughter for the Field Trip Permission Form. She will need your signature on the form to participate in any travel/transportation related to the course. Each instructor will send home the permission form with your daughter.
You may visit the school website for updated information regarding Interim Week by clicking here . Please direct any questions regarding Interim Week courses to Mr. Kelly Fast at kfast@stteresasacademy.org .

Host Family Needed
STA Student from France Needs New Host Family
Manon Jarque (age 15), a freshman student from STA’s sister school in Le Puy, France, needs a new home for the upcoming semester.

Manon began school at STA this past fall and has fallen in love with St. Teresa’s, her new American friends, and Kansas City. You may have seen her perform in the recent theatre production of   Once Upon a Mattress  ( Manon is pictured in costume ) .

You’ll find that among the many benefits of hosting Manon are:

  • Your family will be enriched by embracing another culture and language.
  • Manon speaks and understands English.
  • You’ll demonstrate to your STA student your willingness to love the dear neighbor without distinction.
  • You’ll create long-lasting relationships with this exchange family.

To discuss becoming Manon’s host family, please contact Barbara McCormick at  bmccormick@stteresasacademy.org  or 816-501-0036.
Campus Ministry
Rosary and Mass Opportunities during Advent
On December 2 , the first Monday of Advent, STA parents will be hosting a communal Rosary. We will begin at 11:00 a.m. in the quad with a blessing of the Advent wreath and then will proceed into the Chapel to pray the Rosary together.

On Thursday, December 5, at 7:00 p.m. , we will have an evening candlelight liturgy to celebrate the season of Advent as a community - students, parents, siblings, faculty, and staff are all welcome. Weather permitting, we will begin in the quad at the Advent wreath at 7:00 p.m and process into the Chapel for Mass. This liturgy will be held instead of a morning Parent/Daughter Mass this month.

Counseling
Freshman and Sophomore Parents

We will discuss courses, the registration process and timeline, as well as AP and college dual-enrollment courses.

Study tips to remind your daughter:
  • Avoid Cramming! Start preparing far enough in advance so that you are able to identify any areas you do not understand and can get the help you need well in advance.
  • Consider creating a study group with classmates to compare your class notes, listen to and discuss concepts in a new way, and help motivate and encourage yourself in the studying process.
  • When studying, ask yourself what questions are likely to be asked and answer them by using ideas from lectures, textbooks, and handouts.
  • Get plenty of sleep, especially the night before the exam. Staying up late studying the night before the exam will hurt more than help.
  • Eat a healthy meal before the exam. Avoid processed foods, soft drinks, and sugar.
  • Have all the materials you will need for the test gathered together the night before the exam and try to arrive at the test location early so that you can relax and mentally prepare.
