Blast off! Official Launch of Little Inventors: Inventions for Space
On November 30, 2017, in partnership with the
Canadian Space Agency (CSA), the Natural Sciences and Engineering Research Council (NSERC) proudly launched the next edition of
Little Inventors: Inventions for Space. This is an amazing Canada-wide initiative that challenges children to come up with ingenious ideas that could be developed into an invention to make life in space easier and more fun.
|
|
The best inventions will be turned into prototypes by Canada’s expert makers and artisans, and showcased in a special exhibition as part of
Science Literacy Week in September 2018. The most imaginative and innovative of them all will make an appearance in space with Canadian astronaut
David Saint-Jacques when he travels to the International Space Station in November of 2018.
|
|
Since its inauguration in 2015 in the UK, Little Inventors has inspired children all around the world and sparked their imaginations and use of STEM knowledge. In 2016, NSERC partnered with Little Inventors for the
first Canadian experience. It was a hit with children and teachers alike: over
500 designs were submitted, 18 of which were brought to life and exhibited coast to coast, including their current location at the Ontario Science Centre. Two Little Inventors even met the Prime Minister, Justin Trudeau, at a
special science fair!
Share this with your networks, schools, makers and parents!
Little Inventors: Inventions for Space is open to all students across Canada up to 15 years of age. Canadian schools and teachers are encouraged to lead the development of ideas in their classrooms and lead their students through the challenge. Fun and interactive lesson plans and workshop materials are available online for all interested schools and parents.
The deadline to participate in this space challenge is by midnight on Friday, April 13, 2018.
Little Inventors turns children’s ideas into reality with the help of our magnificent makers. They are invited to get involved from the start, meet the Little Inventors, and become part of their creative journeys. Makers also get profiled in our exhibitions and online galleries gaining national and international exposure.
If you are interested in exploring the theme of space with Little Inventors, look on the project’s
webpage for additional information on how to participate or send your questions to
littleinventors@nserc-crsng.gc.ca.

Save the Dates! Science Odyssey May 11-20, 2018
Science Odyssey 2018
is right around the corner! The ten-day national STEM celebration will take place from
May 11-20, 2018.
Successful 2017
Thanks to partners like you, the 2017 edition was remarkably successful. We reached every province and territory with over
860 events,
close to
370 partners
in more than
250 regions
across Canada.
We are thrilled with the success in 2017 but, of course, we are always striving to improve and, working together with STAN members, build a bigger and better Science Odyssey. Last year, 73% of partners who responded to an evaluation survey reported that participating in Science Odyssey resulted in an increased public exposure of their organizations, 55% had an increased participation to their events, and 58% reported fruitful new contacts with other science promotion organizations. Don’t miss out on this great opportunity!
We’re counting on you!
As a Science Odyssey partner, you play a key role in generating engagement and excitement throughout the 10 days. So get ready! Align your existing activities or plan a special event or series of activities related to STEM during Science Odyssey! Take advantage of this opportunity to further engage and attract your stakeholders to your local events.
Stay tuned!
Registration of events will start early in 2018. We will also continue to profile your organization on the Science Odyssey
Facebook
,
Twitter
and
Instagram
year-round. If you have something to share, please let us know!
Mark your calendars! We look forward to working with you for Science Odyssey 2018!

Looking Back on 2017
Last year, as Canada commemorated its sesquicentennial, many STEM groups, communities, and companies launched their own celebrations in participation of the national festivities. New partnerships were forged and networks evolved. There is a legacy of collaboration that has come from the culmination of national events.
There’s no denying that 2017 built up a momentum for STEM in Canada and STAN is eager to keep this moving forward. With our Conference coming up in April, we are focusing on collaboration, not only in theme but in practice; we have teamed up with the Science Writers and Communicators of Canada to bring you combined experiences and new networking opportunities. Register as a member of STAN to connect with your peers across the country, and get a discount on the Conference.
The Signature initiative, Innovation150 saw five different STEM organizations (Actua, the Canadian Association of Science Centres (CASC), Ingenium, the Institute for Quantum Computing (IQC), and the Perimeter Institute) ...
