With cold temperatures upon us, it's time to consider the impact on our homes and to prevent unnecessary damage. It's important to winterize your house each year to save on heating costs and prevent potential damage to your furnace, plumbing, and roof. A few tips:

  • Change the air filter in your HVAC system.
  • Reverse the ceiling fan clockwise to help circulate heat.
  • Prepare snow shovels, salt, and other wintry weather equipment.
  • Keep driveways, walks, and steps free of ice and snow to avoid long-term damage and prevent hazardous walking and driving conditions.

Why Home Matters

Affordable homeownership creates long-lasting and life-changing impacts for families and communities. We invest in people’s futures when we invest in housing. Affordable financing and lower interest rates help households build equity in their home and act as a forced savings mechanism. Homeowners with sustained ownership and affordable loans have higher wealth accumulation.

ReStore

Don't forget!

The ReStore is now open on Mondays! Visit us from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m., Monday through Saturday, and find your treasure! Donations will be accepted at the back of the building Monday through Saturday from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m.

Did you know we have a metal recycling program? Donated metals are turned into cash to help Habitat build affordable homes and make critical repairs in Hanover and King William. Our recycling program accepts donations of appliances, lighting and plumbing fixtures, wires, tools, aluminum, and electronics (just to name a few). These items are disassembled, sorted, and then taken to be recycled by a team of volunteers. Bring your unwanted metals or broken appliances to the ReStore to be both environmentally friendly AND support Habitat’s local programs. The ReStore can accept donations Monday through Saturday between 9 a.m. to 4 p.m.

Join the Habitat ReStore for their first community class for homeowners! Throughout the year, they will be holding informative classes taught by experienced professionals. We will hear about HVAC maintenance, plumbing, electrical work, and financial planning, just to name a few!

On Tuesday, February 27, at 5:45 p.m., Blazer Heating, Air, & Plumbing will share helpful advice on HVAC and plumbing to get through the winter months. Everyone is welcome to attend this free class, and attendees will get snacks and a special ReStore coupon. We hope to see you there!

Save the date! In March, the ReStore will have been in its new space on Stonewall Parkway for 2 years! To celebrate our anniversary, we will hold a customer appreciation day on Saturday, March 16. Come out that day and enjoy an additional 20% off any one item (not to be combined with other discounts). We hope to see you soon!
