Coming Tue, January 11: “Radio Frequency Seismograph: Analyzing Disturbances in HF Radio Bands and their Relationship to Earthquake Activity” by Alex Schwarz, VE7DXW.

Description and Bio: Alex Schwarz, VE7DXW, is an advanced HAM and a graduate of the HTL, Innsbruck, Austria. He moved to Vancouver (Canada) in 1990 and has since been involved in professional communication systems (LDR trunking) and digital point to point wireless network systems. In 2005 he started work in the Biomedical Engineering Department at C&W Hospital in Vancouver.  In 2008, Alex explored the concept of a Bi-LIF (Bidirectional Low Intermediate Frequency) transverter. He developed an MDSR (Modulation –Demodulation Software Radio) to provide a cost-effective and easy-to-use interface between a computer’s soundcard and a transceiver.  In 2016, Alex developed the RF-Seismograph for a solar eclipse experiment. The RF-Seismograph was tested by a team of volunteers which Alex coordinated and managed. In the fall of 2019 Alex and his team found that the RF-Seismograph was actually able to record earthquakes by detecting propagation changes during several local quakes.  Alex is interested in finding low cost, easily accessible technological solutions for applications that would otherwise be overlooked or limited to specialized and expensive equipment and users.
Coming Wed, Jan 19: Minuteman Radio Assoc (MMRA) will host SKYWARN Training at NEST. STARS members are invited to attend. Social time 6:30-7:30. Course time 7:30-10:00 pm. WINTER FIELD DAY 2022 – Sat-Sun Jan 29-30

Open to all licensed amateur radio operators worldwide, Winter Field Day is both a contest and a practice exercise of radio skills. Non-licensed adults and children can get on the air with one of our control operators. The contest runs 2 pm Saturday to 2 pm Sunday, but we plan to operate publicly only 4 to 9 pm Saturday. Properly licensed radio operators are welcome to begin at 2 pm and continue on their own through the night and into Sunday.

Web page for WFD with suggested schedule and volunteer sign-up form: https://nescitech.org/winter-field-day/ Please suggest edits or changes at the meeting.
Coming Tue, February 15: “Hiram Percy Maxim, founder of the ARRL”  by Nelson Farrier, NF7Z.

Description: Hiram Percy Maxim was a genius who made major contributions to several very different fields.  Learn about a fascinating man, how ham radio got its start, and how one man gave hams around the world access to so many bands with so many privileges.

Bio: Nelson is a newly retired middle school science teacher.  He started teaching in 1985 but only became interested in ham radio after his wife, Kathy KE7ZKD, got her license first to do emergency communication. He became a ham just to spend time with her and see if he could pass the tests - which he did by passing his General in 2009 and became KF7EON. Nelson has been interested in electronics and science ever since grade school, but his interest soared when he went to a summer ARRL Teacher Institute in 2011. After that, as a science teacher and later as a STEM teacher, he tried to expose his students to the joys of electronics, radio, Morse code and satellite tracking and communications.  He passed his Extra in 2014 and in May of 2015 received his current call sign.  Nelson regularly attends the Valley Radio Club in Eugene, OR.  He enjoys  tinkering, building inexpensive antennas and other electronic projects.
The Northeast HamXposition (a.k.a. ARRL New England Division Convention) organizing committee has confirmed the dates for the 2022 convention in Marlborough: August 26-28, 2022. The Committee notes that this was the original weekend for the event before they were were forced into a September slot due to venue conflicts.
FOX HUNTING ONLINE CONFERENCES THIS WINTER

PART of Westford President George Allison, K1IG, has proposed a series of online video conferences to discuss foxhunting. “As the snow season arrives, we’ll be taking a hiatus from our outdoor fox hunting events. To keep our expertise up, though, what is the interest in having one or more video conferences over the winter discuss fox hunting? Possible meeting agendas could include fox and fox-finding equipment demos, photos of memorable hunts, discussions of hunting techniques, and improvements or variations to our events.” George says that he is willing to host the conferences with a Webex account.

George requests feedback from interested individuals, including preferred day(s) of the week, and suggested agenda ideas. He can be contacted at k1ig@arrl.net.

It's NOT too late to donate – Have you considered making a gift to NEST on behalf of STARS? STARS is one part of the larger 501(c)(3) organization New England Sci-Tech Inc (NEST) which runs the STEM education center and maker space. NEST supports many programs and clubs, home school and after school programs, clubs for radio, rocketry, astronomy, and robotics, public telescope nights, youth scouting merit badge activities, and so much more. We have an ideal location on top of one of the highest hills in Natick, conveniently located in the Metrowest region of Boston, and yet, unfortunately, we are in a premium rent district. We need your help. If you are not yet a member, please consider joining. If you can make a donation this holiday season, please know that your gift will be doubled by a matching donation from a friend of NEST. Gifts over $25 will receive an official letter of acknowledgment for your tax files. You may send a check marked "donation" payable to New England Sci-Tech Inc. We also need volunteers who can teach classes, give tours, do social media marketing, program raspberry pi devices, edit/produce 30 sec science videos, do woodworking projects, help with astronomy. We welcome your support on the Leadership Team! Talk to Bob if you can help. Thank you so much for your support!
GROUPS.IO COMMUNICATIONS SYSTEM FOR STARS ACTIVITIES
The Groups.io system is commonly used by ARES/SkyWarn, other ham clubs, maker spaces, and organizations that need all-inclusive group communications with legal opt-in/out ability.
We kindly request that everyone use STARS Groups IO for all STARS group activities mailings and announcements. Do not use personal lists.
