Governor Ron DeSantis Announces Major Water Policy Reforms
By Xander Peteres in the Orlando Weekly:
Last week, newly appointed Governor Ron DeSantis went to work and announced an executive order calling for $2.5 billion over the next four years to go toward Everglades restoration – a $1 billion increase – and the establishment of a blue-green algae task force.

The order, dubbed " Achieving More Now for Florida's Environment," promises participation in the Florida Wildlife Commission's Harmful Algae Bloom Task Force to expedite the study of red tide's causes and impacts on the environment and human health, and instructs the South Florida Water Management District to begin the next phase of the Everglades Agricultural Area Storage Reservoir Project and for the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers to approve the project in line with the state's schedule.

The order also will create the Office of Environmental Accountability and Transparency, which will organize scientific research and analysis to keep agencies in line with the state's environmental priorities. A chief science officer will also be appointed under the order, with the goal of coordinating and prioritizing scientific data, research, monitoring and analysis in step with key environmental priorities.

He then asked the entire South Florida water management board to resign as part of his water policy reform. DeSantis thanked the board members for their service but said he had a “bold vision” for the board and asked the members for their immediate resignations.

“I thank you for your service to the State of Florida, but it is time for a clean reset of the leadership of the Board to focus appropriate attention on this bold vision," the governor wrote in a letter. "Therefore, I ask that each of you tender your resignation from the Board, effective immediately."

" Our water and natural resources are the foundation of our economy and our way of life in Florida," DeSantis says in a news release. "The protection of water resources is one of the most pressing issues facing our state. That's why today I'm taking immediate action to combat the threats which have devastated our local economies and threatened the health of our communities."

CITRUS HOT SPOT
Nikki Fried was sworn in last week as state agriculture commissioner, becoming the first woman elected to run the Florida Department of Agriculture and Consumer Services. She also is the only Democrat holding statewide office and the first Democrat on the state Cabinet in eight years. The News Service caught up with Fried on Friday and 1 of their 5 Questions were:
Q: Are you taking any action after a report President Trump has considered using money from the 2018 disaster-relief package, which included several sources of funding for Florida farmers hit by Hurricane Irma, for a border wall? Meanwhile, DeSantis is being urged to get the state Division of Emergency Management to start distributing a $340 million block grant that was included in the package for citrus growers.

FRIED: My priority is getting those dollars from emergency management from Irma down to our ag community. They have been really hit hard from Irma and Hurricane Michael and getting those dollars to them in a timely manner is imperative for their livelihood. These individuals don’t have an opportunity to wait for another off-season to rebuild. Every dollar that comes into them really helps rebuild their land and makes sure they can compete with the rest of ag across the country.

(Are you hearing, as Sen. Ben Albritton said, no federal dollars from the 2018 disaster relief package have reached Florida’s citrus growers?)

100 percent. We heard that throughout the campaign trail; that there were farmers all across the state that were still waiting for their money. We knew going into this, that money had not been disbursed yet.
