Whether by writing grants or teaching, Dr. Lisa Shannon hopes to improve life for people in Eastern Kentucky
Growing up in Louisa, Dr. Lisa Shannon, associate professor of social work at Morehead State University, is familiar with the lack of resources and the poverty that oftentimes comes with growing up in Eastern Kentucky. Now, with a proficiency in grant writing, a passion for teaching and a purposeful mentality, she’s found a few ways to do something about it.

Amethyst Muncy prepares for law school possibilities after earning MSU’s highest-ever LSAT score
As an undergraduate student at Morehead State University with plans to go to law school, Amethyst Muncy has what would be considered a rare thing: A good problem. The good problem: Too many possibilities.

For Whelans, MSU is a family tradition
For Rick (90) and Rhonda Whelan (18), MSU is a way of life. But Rick and Rhonda’s relationship almost didn’t happen because neither had intentions of attending MSU. As a senior at Dixie Heights High School (Fort Mitchell) in 1986, Rick was a soccer player who planned to enroll at the University of Cincinnati. But MSU got involved late and a meeting with the coaching staff convinced Rick that MSU was the better fit.

As for Rhonda, the 1987 graduate of Breathitt County High School was headed to EKU to run track. She then learned of the many opportunities available at MSU, including a leadership grant, housing scholarship and other assistance that would pay for her college. It was simply too good to pass up.

The rest is history.
