BROOKLYN, NY—Democratic NY State Assembly Candidate Michael Bailey (running for AD 56; encompassing Bedford-Stuyvesant and portions of Crown Heights) released the following statement supporting the ban of most arrests by ICE agents in several New York City immigration courts:
“I support the judge’s decision to bar ICE from making immigration arrests in New York City courthouses. Our courts should be places of justice, due process, and equal protection under the law — not fear and intimidation. As an attorney working in the court system, I have seen firsthand how fear and instability can create serious barriers to legal access for working families and vulnerable communities.
Constitutional rights only matter when people can safely exercise them. No one should be afraid to appear in court to defend their rights or seek justice because they fear being detained.
I join supporters across New York in welcoming this decision and reaffirming that our diversity is our strength. Our immigrant communities help power our neighborhoods, small businesses, culture, and economy. We move forward not by dividing people, but by standing together in unity and ensuring every New Yorker is treated with dignity and fairness under the law.”
