COUNCIL MEMBER YDANIS RODRIGUEZ AND MANHATTAN B.P. GALE A. BREWER JOINT STATEMENT ON POSTPONEMENT OF HIGH SCHOOL FOR HEALTH CAREERS AND SCIENCES CLOSURE VOTE
New York, NY - Manhattan Borough President Gale A. Brewer and Council Member Ydanis Rodríguez issued the following statement reacting to the Panel for Educational Policy's postponement last night of a planned vote on the closure of the High School for Health Careers in Washington Heights:
"The uptown community spoke out with one voice to save this high school, and buy-in from parents and the community is a priceless asset in public education. With it, you can work miracles, and without it, even small changes can be hard.
"What's more, this school closure did not make policy sense. On a number of measures, this school is actually ahead of most or all the other Renewal Schools. Meanwhile, the enrollment decrease administrators cited as a reason for closure is partially attributable to an enrollment decrease across all of District 6, and partially attributable to the fact that the Renewal Schools label has stigmatized this and other schools in the program.
"We thank the Panel for Educational Policy for doing its job, listening to the many community members who testified, and deciding to review this matter further instead of forging ahead with an ill-advised closure plan. We look forward to working with the mayor and the Department of Education in the coming weeks on strategies to strengthen this high school and others across Manhattan that need help.
"Congratulations to our elected colleagues, Community Board 12, Community Education Council 6, the parents, and especially the students, who showed up, spoke out, and made this victory possible."
DECLARACIÓN CONJUNTA DEL CONCEJAL YDANIS RODRIGUEZ Y LA PRESIDENT DEL CONDADO DE MANHATTAN GALE A. BREWER SOBRE APLAZAMIENTO DE VOTE DE CIERRE DEL "HIGH SCHOOL FOR HEALTH CAREERS AND SCIENCES"
Nueva York, NY -- La presidenta del condado de Manhattan Gale A. Brewer y el concejal Ydanis Rodríguez emitieron la siguiente declaración en respuesta a la postergación del Panel de Política Educativa la noche anterior de una votación planificada sobre el cierre de la Escuela Secundaria de Carreras de la Salud y Ciencias en Washington Heights:
"La comunidad del alto Manhattan se pronunció con una sola voz para salvar esta escuela secundaria, y el compromiso de los padres y la comunidad es invaluable en la educación pública. Con ese compromiso, se pueden hacer milagros. Sin el, incluso pequeños cambios pueden ser difíciles.
"Además, el cierre de esta escuela no tenía sentido desde el punto de vista político. En varias medidas, esta escuela está por delante de la mayoría o de todas las otras Escuelas "Renewal". Mientras tanto, la disminución de la inscripción de administradores citada como una razón para el cierre es parcialmente atribuible a una la disminución en la matrícula en todo el Distrito 6, y parcialmente atribuible al hecho de que la etiqueta de las Escuelas "Renewal" ha estigmatizado a esta y a otras escuelas en el programa.
