Mid Lenten Luncheon
On Sunday, March 3rd, the community of St. Mary's gathered to observe Meetchink, marking the median day of Lent. This significant day, which falls on the 24th day or the fourth week of Lent, symbolizes the halfway point of our spiritual journey toward Easter. While Meetchink itself does not carry specific religious rites, it holds a cherished place in our traditions, serving as a beacon of fellowship and encouragement. It is a moment to remind each other of the importance of perseverance in our spiritual practices and to renew our commitment to the path that leads us closer to the resurrection.
This year, our Meetchink extravagant luncheon was graciously prepared by the St. Mary Women's Guild. Their dedication in preparing a heartwarming Lenten meal allowed for a true expression of community and shared faith. We extend our deepest gratitude to Harald Sakayan and the Sakayan family for sponsoring this beautiful luncheon in memory of Victoria Sakayan.
The event also featured an enlightening presentation by Mariam Kholoyan from the Armenian Assembly. She shared insightful perspectives on the critical work of the Assembly, particularly highlighting the importance of the upcoming Advocacy Days. Mariam emphasized the essential role of community engagement in advocating for Armenian issues at Congress, inspiring us all to actively participate in these efforts. This program was organized by the Knights of Vartan.
As we continue our Lenten journey, let the spirit of Meetchink inspire us to maintain our resolve and support one another in our spiritual and communal endeavors. Together, we move forward with renewed faith and dedication, embodying the values that unite us as a community.

Reflecting and Witnessing Together: A Lenten Journey at St. Mary Continues
On Wednesday, March 6, the community of St. Mary gathered for the fourth Lenten service and discussion of the season. After the Peace Hour prayer service, the reflection of the day was led by Ms. Anahit Tevosyan, who presented a deeply moving meditation titled "Witness through charity and hospitality." Her talk encouraged those present to engage in deep introspection about how witnessing the Lord's presence in our lives can be manifested through acts of kindness, charity, and the warm welcoming of others. Ms. Tevosyan shared personal stories that illuminated her journey of faith, intertwined with thought-provoking commentary on biblical passages emphasizing the importance of charity and hospitality. Her message resonated deeply, prompting attendees to reflect on their own experiences of faith and community.
The evening was further enriched by a dinner sponsored by the St. Mary Choir, exemplifying the very themes discussed during the service. The meal provided an opportunity for those present to come together in a spirit of generosity and unity, embodying the essence of Lenten observance.
During the dinner, the attendees had the pleasure of hearing from Ms. Naira Babayan, who spoke passionately about her work on the English edition of Mark Aren's book, "Where Wild Roses Bloom: The Anatolian Story." Ms. Babayan's presentation highlighted the profound impact the book had on her and stressed its importance, urging everyone to explore its contents. The book will be available at St. Mary's Gift Store.
Everyone is encouraged to attend future services, held every Wednesday at 7:00 pm, to continue our journey of faith, reflection, and communal connection during this sacred time.

Reflecting on the Divine: A Lenten Journey at St. Mary with the ACYOA
On March 9, St. Mary opened its doors to host a spiritually enriching Lenten Retreat for its ACYOA members. This year's retreat, under the theme "Who is Jesus? Exploring His 7 I AM Statements," offered a deep dive into the profound identity and teachings of Jesus Christ, fostering a closer relationship with Him during the Lenten season.
Two members of the ACYOA Central Council, Andrew Yenicag and Jacqueline Russell, guided the retreat. They traveled to Washington, D.C., to share their wisdom and insights. Their dedication to nurturing the faith and fellowship among the youth was deep, turning the day into a memorable spiritual journey.
Eleven ACYOA members of St. Mary participated in this year's retreat. The day was structured around the exploration of the seven "I AM" statements of Jesus, found in the Gospel of John, which are central to understanding His divine nature and mission. Through interactive sessions, reflective discussions, and prayer, participants delved into the meaning behind these powerful declarations, such as "I am the bread of life," and "I am the light of the world," seeking to understand not only the historical Jesus but also His enduring presence and influence in their lives today.
The retreat wasn't just an academic or theological exercise; it was a day filled with moments of personal reflection, communal prayer, and shared experiences. It was a time to pause, reflect, and pray together, reinforcing the bond of faith that connects each member to the other and to the larger body of Christ.

Reflecting and Connecting: The Fifth Lenten Service at St. Mary
On the evening of Wednesday, March 13, the St. Mary community convened for its fifth Lenten service, marking another significant moment in their seasonal journey of reflection and fellowship. This service began with the Rest Hour prayer, setting a contemplative tone for the evening.
The highlight of the evening was an interesting reflection offered by Sub. Dn. Sevan Topjian, titled "Witness through testimony, - then and now." In his meditation, Sub. Dn. Sevan eloquently discussed the pivotal role of Christian testimonies. He explored not just their historical significance but also illuminated their relevance in contemporary life, urging the community to live out their faith through authentic testimony in today's world.
The sense of community and shared purpose was further strengthened by a dinner hosted by the St. Mary Shnorhali School. This gathering wasn't just about sharing a meal; it was an embodiment of the Lenten spirit of generosity and unity. Such occasions remind everyone of the importance of coming together, supporting one another, and reinforcing the communal bonds that are so essential during the Lenten period.
Adding to the evening's enrichment, Mr. Aris Martirosian shared insights about Camp Nubar, highlighting the opportunities it presents for the youth of the community to engage and participate. His words served as an encouragement for the younger members to embrace these communal activities, which foster growth and connection within the faith.
Everyone is warmly encouraged to participate in these Wednesday services at 7:00 pm as we journey together through this sacred season, enriching our faith and strengthening our communal ties.

ACYOA Juniors Lenten Good Deed
After Badarak March 10th, the teens of St Mary Church met in the kitchen to make sack lunches for people in need. The teens had a wonderful time of fellowship, made new friends, and served the local community. The group made sandwiches and packed small bags with cookies, pretzels, and fruit. The food was delivered to the Small Things Matter nonprofit in Maryland https://smallthingsmatter.org/ which distributed them. Many thanks to the parents for providing the supplies, and to Katie Kumkumian for organizing this meaningful event for the ACYOA Juniors.
“Then the righteous will answer him, ‘Lord, when did we see you hungry and feed you, or thirsty and give you something to drink? … “The King will reply, ‘Truly I tell you, whatever you did for one of the least of these brothers and sisters of mine, you did for me.’ Matthew 25: 37, 40

Reflecting on Our Final Lenten Journey
On the evening of Wednesday, March 20, our parish community gathered for the sixth and concluding session of our Lenten Service series. This year's theme, "Be My Witnesses," has guided us through a spiritual journey toward a deeper understanding of our faith and our roles as witnesses of God's love and grace. The final service began with the Peace Hour, setting the perfect tone for what was to be a profound continuation of our Lenten reflections.
Following the service, we were honored to have Dr. Anna Amirkhanyan share her insights and meditations on "Preparing to Witness in Holy Week." Dr. Amirkhanyan, with her depth of knowledge and spiritual sensitivity, encapsulated the essence of our Lenten theme, engaging every heart and mind in attendance. Her presentation was a beautiful meditation that invited us to ponder deeply on what it means to prepare ourselves to be witnesses to the events of Holy Week and the glorious Resurrection.
Dr. Amirkhanyan underscored the significance of Holy Week in the Christian journey, reminding us that being witnesses is not merely about observing from the sidelines. Instead, it involves an active preparation of our hearts and minds to fully comprehend and embrace the profound mysteries of our faith. She eloquently detailed how the Holy Week leads us into the heart of the Christian narrative, allowing us to experience the sorrow and joy, the suffering, and ultimately, the triumph of Easter. Her reflections left us inspired and more deeply connected to our faith and to each other, as we were reminded of the transformative power of witnessing the love and salvation offered through Christ's passion, death, and resurrection.
The evening was further enriched by the wonderful dinner hosted by St. Mary's Ararat Avak Society and Gift Stor members. The delicious meal provided an opportunity for fellowship and gratitude, allowing us to share in the joy and community spirit that characterizes our church family. It was a fitting end to our Lenten series, encapsulating the warmth and togetherness that have been evident throughout our journey this Lent.
As we move forward towards Holy Week and Easter, let us carry with us the insights and inspirations from our Lenten services. Let us embrace the call to "Be My Witnesses," not only in our personal spiritual journeys but in our actions and interactions with the world around us. May the lessons learned and the community spirit felt during this Lenten season continue to nourish our souls and guide our steps as we walk together towards the light of the Resurrection.

Celebrating Tradition and Community: The Jingalov Hats Workshop and Sale at St. Mary Armenian Church
This past weekend, St. Mary Armenian Church was the center of a vibrant cultural celebration, thanks to the St. Mary Women's Guild. They embarked on a culinary journey back to the roots of Armenian tradition with the Jingalov Hats workshop and sale. Held from March 16th to 17th, the event was both a cooking class and, more importantly, a testament to the dedication to preserving and sharing our rich heritage.
The workshop saw over 30 enthusiastic participants gather under one roof, eager to learn the art of making Jingalov Hats. Artsakhtsi women, with their profound expertise and passion, provided step-by-step instructions, transforming the process into an immersive cultural experience. The participants, ranging in age and background, were united by their curiosity and love for Armenian culinary traditions.
Jingalov Hats, a traditional Artsakh flatbread pie filled with a mix of aromatic herbs and greens, is more than just a dish; it's a symbol of Artsakh's rich cultural landscape. The workshop aimed to teach more than the mere technique of preparing this delicacy. It was about connecting with the land and experiencing the Armenian communal spirit that cooking and sharing a meal can foster.
On Sunday, the fruits of this labor were joyfully shared with the wider community. Over 100 pieces of Jingalov Hats were prepared, filling the air with enticing aromas and the hearts of all present with warmth.
The event garnered special appreciation for the St. Mary Women's Guild, Hasmik Khachatryan and Elvina Avetisyan, whose dedication made this cultural revival possible. It was a reminder of the importance of preserving our heritage and the powerful role food plays in connecting us to our roots and each other. In keeping with the spirit of Artsakh and Armenian tradition, the Jingalov Hats workshop and sale at St. Mary Armenian Church beautifully reflected what it means to come together, learn, and celebrate the rich tapestry of our heritage.

Illuminating Lecture on Women and Power in Medieval Armenia at CUA
The Catholic University of America hosted an enlightening lecture titled "Women and Power in Medieval Armenia: Between Local Dynasties and Eurasian Empires" by Professor Zara Pogossian on March 21.
Professor Pogossian, a renowned specialist in medieval Armenia, captivated attendees with stories of elite Armenian women like Sophia, an Artsruni noblewoman who left her mark on the Gndevank‘ monastery in Syunik‘. Through her lecture, Pogossian explored the vital economic, cultural, and political influence wielded by these women, challenging traditional historiography and highlighting their contributions beyond mere dynastic ties.
With her extensive research on Armenia's role in Eurasian connectivities and female asceticism, Professor Pogossian's insights provided a deeper understanding of the power dynamics and cultural encounters in medieval Eurasia. This lecture was not only a journey through Armenia's rich history but also a celebration of its women's enduring legacy.
This lecture was graciously sponsored by our parishioner, Dean Shaninian, as part of the Grace and Paul Shahinian Armenian Christian Art and Culture Lecture Series, in memory of his beloved parents.

Holy Week and Easter Sunday at St. Mary Church
The Holy Week and Easter celebrations at St. Mary Church commenced on March 24 with Palm Sunday, ushering in Holy Week with a celebration of our Lord's triumphant entry into Jerusalem. This year, the ceremony was infused with special significance, as Der Hovsep led the Badarak, blessing the community's children in a heartfelt expression of faith and hope for the future. The day was further highlighted by the installation service for the newly elected ACYOA members, which was succeeded by a luncheon and program in the church hall.
As the week progressed, the observance of Great and Holy Thursday on March 28 deeply moved the congregation. The day's events, including the Holy Badarak and the Washing of the Feet, vividly recalled the Last Supper and Jesus's act of humble service. The evening's service of Khavaroom brought the community together in solemn remembrance of the Lord's betrayal and passion.
Great and Holy Friday, observed on March 29, offered a poignant reflection on the Crucifixion and Entombment of Christ. The ceremonies provided a moment of contemplation on the profound sacrifice made for humanity's redemption.
The anticipation built until Easter Eve, when the community gathered for Vespers and Scriptural readings by the Shnorhali School students, culminating in the Jragalouits Badarak. This service, held on March 30, heralded the dawn of Easter Sunday, signifying the light of Christ dispelling the darkness of the world.
Easter Sunday, celebrated on March 31, was a day of joyous exultation, marking the Feast of the Glorious Resurrection of our Lord Jesus Christ. The Morning Service and Badarak, celebrated by Der Hovsep, were especially uplifting, with a distinguished presence of Abp. Voskan Kalpakian from the Holy Etchmiadzin, who delivered the day's message, adding a special dimension to the celebration. The choir members and deacons enriched the service, culminating in the Antastan service, which symbolized the spread of Christ's resurrection light to all corners of the world.
The spirit of generosity and community was palpable throughout the celebrations, with heartfelt thanks extended to Mrs. Jermen Hallajian, Mrs. Asanet Hacikoglu, Mrs. Hermine Khatchatoorian, Ms. Sara Arabian and Mis.
