LIKE SO MANY other organizations, ARISE Detroit! has been confronted with the unprecedented challenge of surviving and serving in the face of the COVID-19 health crisis.

Specifically, how could we possibly have our 14 th annual ARISE Detroit! Neighborhoods Day on Aug. 1 without endangering the thousands of people who participate with events all over the city.

After all, many of the events, volunteer projects, art and music festivals, school supply giveaways and more draw large crowds which can’t be done in the current health environment.
As our ARISE Detroit! board pondered the situation – meeting by conference call and Zoom – we were receiving phone calls at our office with people leaving messages. They were asking the question, “Will there be a Neighborhoods Day this year?”

We didn’t want to cancel what has become an iconic day for residents in neighborhoods all over Detroit over the past 13 years, a day of community service, pride and celebration unlike any city in our nation.
But we were also mindful of city, state and federal mandates that should be observed to keep people safe.

Thus, we have developed a plan, we believe, that emphasizes safety, draws the community together and will lift spirits at time when it is so critically needed.
So this is what we will do.

STAY SAFE: CREATE IN YOUR SPACE

Simply put, for this Neighborhoods Day, we want people to move their events to their homes – their front porches, front lawns, sidewalks or driveways.
Musicians can play their music from the front porch. Artists can display their work on the sidewalk. Kids can play chalk games on sidewalks or have other activities in their driveways or back yards. School supply giveaways can be done on a drive-thru and pick up basis. Use your imagination to show your community pride.
Yes, this Neighborhoods Day will be different; But it will also be one we won’t forget.

STAY SAFE: CREATE IN YOUR SPACE

HOW IT WILL WORK


- -All Neighborhoods Day participants are urged to practice social distancing and refrain from events that draw crowds

-- Churches, block clubs and community groups that register will have their neighborhood networks engage in a variety of activities, many of them in their own spaces, homes, businesses, etc. This can be done without crowds.

-- Activate Your Block. Community groups can register individually and encourage block residents to devise their Neighborhoods Day events at their homes.

- -Registration fee r educed from $50 to $25.

- -Cleanup bags and enlarged yard signs with the name of each registered organization will be provided. Participants are encouraged to display their banners and wear t-shirt of past Neighborhoods Days. Should we be able to secure funding, we will add hardware vouchers for beautification projects and t-shirts for your event.


POSSIBLE NEIGHBORHOODS DAY ACTIVITIES

1.    Individual blight removal and beautification of homes and businesses with no more than 10 volunteers participating and practicing social distancing with face masks and gloves.
2.    Homeowner spruce up and beautification projects, such as painting, mowing lawns, tree, flower or shrub planting.
3.    School supply giveaways with curbside pickups as opposed to groups gathering to distribute supplies.
4.    Front porch, front lawn, or backyard parties, barbecues, picnics and celebrations of various kinds with family members.
5.    Musicians Challenge. Front porch or front lawn neighborhood music events with musicians playing their instruments on front porches.
6.    Sidewalk games with chalk or other kids activities at their homes.
7.    Neighborhood block dances with dancing to music in front of their homes or in driveways. Have DJ’s provide the music.
8.    Artists challenge. Encourage local artists to display their paintings, sculptures, etc. on sidewalks in front of homes and businesses.
9.    Serve A Senior. Encourage young people, or others, to do a service for a senior citizen, paint a house, spruce something up, food delivery, etc.
10.          Social distance bike rides
11.          Concerts with attendees in cars, similar to drive in movie theaters.
12.          Use your imagination!
