BLESSING OF THE BEASTS
OCTOBER 6
THIS Sunday, OCTOBER 6
at 2:00 pm
Plan to bring all your critters to the Blessing of the Beasts for the Feast of St. Francis.
We will bless all the animals in our parish that walk, creep, run, fly, swim, or slither. Invite your friends to join us with their animals.
There will be treats for cats, dogs, rabbits and other furry friends.
Sorry, we can’t feed the lizards and the snakes, but they are welcome to come and be blessed!
Service hours will be given for students who come to help with the animals on Sunday and/or help prepare treat bags on Saturday, October 5 at 3:30 pm.

ADOPT A HIGHWAY
OCTOBER 12
Adopt-A-Highway Clean-Up Project. To move our mission beyond our parish doors, the Sustainability Committee has secured the adoption of Cliff Road, between Pilot Knob and Lexington, from Dakota County for the Catholic Community of St. Thomas Becket. Saturday, October 12 is the next scheduled clean up of our stretch of road.
We will meet outside the front of the church at 8:30am to gather supplies and then move out to different zones along the road. Expect to spend two to three hours between safety briefing and clean up efforts.
Minimum age to participate is 12. Anyone under 18 must be accompanied by an adult, or have an adult available to sign waiver. Bring your own gloves, grabbers, sunscreen, and hats. Please bring a safety vest if you have one. The county will provide bags and some safety vests. Participants should wear long pants and closed-toe shoes.
Please bring your own safety vest and/or trash collection bucket, if you have them.

HAVE YOU SEEN THIS WOMAN
OCTOBER 22
Two years ago, we heard from Sen. Mary Kunesh about efforts to address the crisis of murdered and missing indigenous women. We learned that, while Native women and girls make up only 1% of the population of Minnesota, they represent 8% of known murder victims and 20% of sex trafficking victims.
The Spirit of Justice Committee has invited Sen. Kunesh to update us on the statewide work to address this issue as well as other Native issues in Minnesota.
Please join us: Tuesday, October 22, 2024, from 6:30 pm - 8:30 pm
(6:00 – 6:30 for social time, pizza, wine and soft drinks) here at STB.
This event is free, but we ask that you sign up so that we can properly plan for space and food. There will be a free will offering for local organizations who support Indigenous Minnesotans.

GIVING GARDEN
Yes, we are winding down with our giving garden for this growing season - after all, it's October! However our harvests continue to provide a good volume and a good variety of food to our neighbors in need via The Open Door food pantry. We have regularly been delivering over 100# of fresh, organic produce to them twice a week.
About half the summer plants have now been pulled. Many of the recently vacated boxes were planted with fall veggies, particularly radishes, and we should be harvesting those soon. We're not quite done yet!
Thanks to all those who have so enthusiastically contributed to the effort,

THANK YOU
A BIG THANK YOU to all who graciously donated during this past summer’s Mission Appeals in your parish. My Bishop will put your money to good use toward the construction of a well in the Diocese of Same Tanzania to provide a source of clean water to villagers and help improve their health by avoiding water-borne illnesses. Your generosity is a huge blessing to my people and we ask for your continued prayers and you will be in my prayers also.
God Bless You! Fr. Mansuetus Setonga from the Diocese of Same [pronounced SAW-MAY

GOSPEL MEDITATION
ENCOURAGE DEEPER UNDERSTANDING OF SCRIPTURE
October 6, 2024
27th Sunday in Ordinary Time
As a young pastor years ago, I met with a middle-aged couple who had been divorced and civilly remarried. They were frustrated that an annulment had to precede a Church marriage. Sympathizing with their plight, I promised to walk with them along their journey. Once as we sat in my office, the man said to me, “Why is the Church so difficult on marriage?” I replied, “Actually, Jesus’ teaching is what’s difficult.” He furrowed his brow and asked what I meant.
We opened the Bible and together read today’s gospel passage from Mark 10:12 in which Jesus says, “Whoever divorces his wife and marries another, commits adultery with her…” My two friends sat in silent astonishment. Surely Jesus understands the complexities of human life and sexual love. The words hung thick and heavy in the air. How could the merciful Lord be so seemingly unrealistic in his expectations, especially with so much divorce and remarriage in our world?
I didn’t know what to say. So, we kept reading. Next, Jesus says, “Let the children come to me.” The innocence of children allows them to receive and give love, to trust unconditionally, to believe in love that endures. Most children aren’t yet jaded by statistics, broken hearts, or dysfunctional relationships. Children remind us of the world to come. The couple and I began to talk about child-like trust in Jesus and his teaching, and we continued to move forward. When it comes to the Church’s demanding teaching on marriage, it’s best to approach it as trusting children, whatever situations in which we find ourselves.

EVERYDAY STEWARDSHIP
Therein lies the...rib
“If I were God…” is a dangerous way to start a sentence, but how many of us do this? Probably more regularly than we would like to admit. Even if we don’t verbalize the sentiment, we likely think it from time to time. Most of us finish that statement with some genius, original idea for eradicating difficulty and pain from the world. If I were God, I wouldn’t let anyone go hungry. If I were God, all wealth would be equally distributed. If I were God, war wouldn’t exist.
I imagine that, when we think thoughts like these, God shakes His head and wonders why we don’t look a little harder at the whole of His creation — because I can promise you, it’s never lacking.
When Adam had a need for a companion, God used what was available: Adam’s rib. Everything that He had put into place was already perfect, already complete. Woman was a new creation, but not a new species. Adam searched through all of creation to find the perfect mate, but God had tucked the answer inside of His creation all along.
I’m guilty of it as much as anyone else — looking to Heaven with a chip on my shoulder. “Why haven’t you sent me what I need? I’ve been asking over and over again.” But have I even thought to look inside of myself?
Where is the rib you are missing today? What are the opportunities God has set before you? What are the needs that He is ready to fulfill, if only you would stop wasting time lamenting all the solutions that don’t fit the bill?
— Tracy Earl Welliver, MTS
