Negative News re: Synthetic Turf

The STC is on the record in response to Boston Mayor Michelle Wu's decision to ban future installation of synthetic turf in public parks due to the presence of PFAS, as follows:

"The mayor’s decision will only succeed in depriving Bostonians of year-round access to playing fields. We will continue to work with public officials to educate them on the proven safety and reliability benefits of synthetic turf systems." - STC

Hurricane Ian Outreach

STC Members, colleagues and community members have witnessed, and in some cases experienced firsthand, Hurricane Ian’s devastation.

Please be patient and be safe. If you can donate or volunteer, make sure to find an organization active in disaster recovery, verify their non-profit status (here is one tool), and reach out to them directly before taking action.

How STC Advocates for You

The STC fills a void by sharing the facts about synthetic turf and proactively engaging with political leadership, particularly in progressive states like Maryland. Our primary objective is to defeat any harmful legislation that adds cost with no real benefit to stakeholders and owners.

On August 16, STC president Melanie Taylor made a proactive, in-person introduction to Maryland Senate President Bill Ferguson in Towson, the county seat of Baltimore County. During a private campaign event, industry asked, "What is on the environmental agenda for next session?" In summary, President Ferguson responded that we need to be thoughtful about how we move forward but the facts are undeniable that the chamber will continue to examine how to best move on the environmental goals in the long term.

STC Issue Briefs + Talking Points

Did you know that a small but extremely vocal group of activists is driving the conversation about synthetic turf systems? Left unchallenged, their message causes harm to the industry and our effort to promote synthetic turf as a sustainable play surface.

At this stage, the STC depends on your membership dues, a small staff and dedicated volunteers to make the kind of difference we do. There is much more that we want to accomplish for the industry, however, we are facing a coordinated opposition -- and how we respond matters more than ever.

Tips for Working with the Media

As a trade association, the STC plays an important role by speaking to trade laws/standards/guidelines and providing one industry voice. Each year, we field dozens of media inquiries with the understanding that nearly 99% of the reporters are coming at a negative angle and/or just making stuff up to meet their narrative. Most often, the piece is going to be bad but the STC tries to make it less bad by providing comment whenever possible.

Moving into 2023, we are counting on your continued membership and support to help the STC reach its financial goals for marketing and public relations -- and eliminate the negative perception of synthetic turf that we have faced for so many years.
