UNM Rainforest Forum Features Members from the Advanced Economic Development Leadership Program

During the forum, members from the
Advanced Economic Development Leadership (
AEDL) program discussed the goals of the program and how it strives to expand the skills of today’s leaders in the field of economic development. Neal Wade, AEDL Managing Partner, commented that “the concept is 8 – 10 years old… [and] based in part on the simple question: Can we take mid- to senior- level training to another level?
” Presently, AEDL is nationwide alliance of four major universities offering an advanced economic development leadership course for mid- and senior-level economic development professionals. Participants receive advanced training in leadership, innovation, project management, negotiation, and other areas to prepare for the challenges and opportunities of contemporary economic development.
Registration is now open for AEDL 4.0 beginning fall 2020!

New Coalition Launches to Celebrate and Protect the Bayh-Dole Act
|
|
Bayh-Dole 40 is a coalition of research and scientific organizations, as well as those directly involved in commercializing new products, dedicated to celebrating and protecting the University and Small Business Patent Procedures Act of 1980, better known as the “Bayh-Dole Act.” The coalition was formed to educate policymakers about Bayh-Dole’s positive impact on medical innovation and defend the Act against imminent threats during its 40th anniversary year.

GPER G-1 Development Group Announces:
Researchers at the University of New Mexico Publish Their Advancements in Treating Diabetes and Obesity in Renowned Medical Journal
|
|
GPER G-1 Development Group, a portfolio company of the New Mexico Start-up Factory, is a New Mexico-based drug discovery company developing a diabetes and weight loss drug based on technology developed at the University of New Mexico. GPER G-1 Development Group congratulates the UNM-led team of investigators that recently published a manuscript in Science Translational Medicine (one of the premiere journals from the American Association for the Advancement of Science) titled “Preclinical efficacy of the GPER-selective agonist G-1 in mouse models of obesity and diabetes.” Eric Prossnitz, PhD, Distinguished Professor of Internal Medicine and Chief of the Division of Molecular Medicine, is the senior author of the paper. The publication highlights the recent discovery of the G protein-coupled estrogen receptor (GPER) as a novel therapeutic target for obesity and diabetes.

Japanese Graduate Students and New Director of MPO, Inc. Participate in STC’s Internship Academy
|
|
STC.UNM’s Internship Academy hosted a group of graduate students from Osaka Prefecture University and Osaka City University located in Osaka, Japan, and the Director of MPO, Inc., the technology transfer office of St. Marianna University School of Medicine in Kawasaki, Japan. The six graduate students participated in STC’s five-day internship program designed to help students foster an entrepreneurial mindset and for those interested in learning about the role of a technology transfer office.

Stephen D. Hersee, Ph.D.
2012 STC Innovation Fellow
As the 2012 STC Innovation Fellow, Dr. Hersee is recognized as an outstanding innovator in developing nanoscale epitaxial materials. Especially gallium nitride (GaN) and related materials that are important for solid-state lighting and high-speed transistors.
Dr. Hersee has since retired and followed his family’s long-lasting passion for music. Dr. Hersee is now performing regularly in “Neon Roadster” (a Blues band) and “The Oxford Jazz Trio”.
