Redwood City Public Library will host STEAM at the Library throughout the month of October, in partnership with the Redwood City Library Foundation, Friends of the Redwood City Library Bookstore, the Bay Area Science Festival, and the American Chemical Society. The library is a natural place to explore all aspects of STEAM- Science, Technology, Engineering, Art and Mathematics. The library's books, online resources, hands on workshops, crafts and activities provided throughout the year give the opportunity to dive into any topic and learn. STEAM combined with the power of literacy opens any door.
During STEAM at the Library enjoy activities for all ages and events exploring different elements of STEAM. With Science, Technology, Engineering, Art and Mathematics, there’ll be something for everyone! Our STEAM events include a Pop-Up Chemistry series, Family Forensic Chemistry, a Teen COVID Kitchen, Little Learners Lab, STEAM Craft Club, and more. The month wraps up with a series of fun events in partnership with the Bay Area Science Festival, October 21-25, 2020. Learn more at www.redwoodcity.org/STEAM
MAKERSPACE AT THE DOWNTOWN LIBRARY
Did you know that we are building a Makerspace in the Downtown Library? A makerspace is a community workspace where people can gather to use sewing machines, robotics, electronics and other tools. The Makerspace will serve all members of the community with an interest in STEAM and arts and crafts. The Redwood City Library Foundation has a $300,000 fundraising goal to support this project. BANNED BOOKS WEEK
At Redwood City Public Library, we welcome all people and all stories. This week is Banned Books Week! Held in the last week of September, the week spotlights current and historical attempts to censor books in libraries and schools. It brings together the entire book community — librarians, booksellers, publishers, journalists, teachers, and readers of all types — in shared support of the freedom to seek and to express ideas, even those some consider unorthodox or unpopular.
In 2019, the American Library Association Office for Intellectual Freedom tracked 377 challenges to library, school, and university materials and service. Of the 566 books that were targeted, here are the Top most challenged books.

ONE BOOK, ONE COUNTY
This year's One Book, One County read is a frequently challenged book, Alex Gino's debut novel, George. George details the struggles of a young child that everyone believes to be a boy. The book touches on topics in the LGBTQ community and packs it into a story that captures both young and old audiences.
