Earlier this year, AzCASE and Cox Communications awarded a 2021 STEM Grant to the Phoenix Public Library Foundation for an Advanced Coding Program in their MACH1 Makerspace at Burton Barr Central Library.
These classes engage children ages 8-12 in coding using the familiar and fun application, Minecraft. They combine the mechanics of Minecraft games along with core coding concepts as a starting point for children who may not have access to these programs to gain exposure to coding that feels relevant to them.
Here's what they said about the impact of the grant:
"With the help of this grant, the MACH1 Makerspace has been able to allow grateful families access to both playing and learning. Students are excited to share the code they’ve created while away and the interesting things they have built in Minecraft to the class. The grant has allowed for generosity and inclusivity in allowing families that might not otherwise be able to afford the cost of Minecraft, free access from the date of class onward so that their children can always use the skills they’ve acquired through the class. Students in the class, regardless of their previous coding experience and exposure, found common ground quickly. We are happy to report that all students advanced at the same speed. Also, they all learned from each other because of the open format to ask questions and the ability to share screens to fix the student’s codes one on one. Every student we’ve had has given us positive feedback and have been actively engaged before and after class. The ability to have their codes manifested in a fun way is a huge advantage to both us and them."
Bravo for a great program!
