2025-26 Iowa STEM BEST Awards

This February, Iowa STEM awarded 29 Iowa school districts with STEM BEST. This includes 15 new models and 14 returning schools that are looking to expand or rebuild their existing models, creating 136 examples to date.

BEST provides students with career-connected learning experiences and strengthens Iowa’s future workforce through the development and expansion of project-based learning programs.

Tanya Hunt, STEM BEST Program Coordinator, oversees the awards: “These models are exposing students to exciting careers in manufacturing, bioscience, information technology, engineering and more, right in their hometowns.”

The STEM Council’s investment of up to $40,000 for each awardee can be used for curriculum development or integration into existing courses, facility upgrades or purchase of industry grade equipment, educator training and professional development or time for program planning with community partners.

We look forward to catching up to these five schools in the future to learn more about their models. For a complete list of the 29 schools, visit Iowa STEM's website.

Scale-Up in Action with Liz Sisler

Liz Sisler, Des Moines Christian School's STEAM Coordinator, captured the excitement of Root Robots success in this video link, available below.

We caught up with Des Moines Christian STEAM Coordinator, Liz Sisler. She's integrated Scale-Up into DMCS's curriculum for several years. This year, she received Root Robots as part of an award.

"We just finished our first week of introducing the Root Robots to 3rd-5th graders in STEAM class," said Sisler. "I wanted to thank you again for making these awards available! It was very fun getting to hear the excitement and see the students practice coding concepts using these new robots!"

The 2025-26 Scale-Up application is open now! Awards include training and materials. Email Sarah if you need ideas on which of the 13 programs might best fit your students.

Shining the Light on Scale-Up FAQs

Apply for Scale-Up TODAY!

Jeff Beneke, NC STEM Hub's Manager, took a moment to share frequently asked questions. If you need any assistance, please do email Sarah at the hub.

Q: What should I use as my Application Title?

A: To create your Application Title, follow the given format by including the STEM Region abbreviation (e.g. NE, NC, NW, SE, SC, or SW), the name of the program you are applying for, and your organization's name. Here's how you can structure it:

Application Title: [STEM Region Abbreviation], [Program Name], [Your Organization's Name]

Example:

If you're in the South Central Iowa STEM Region and your program is "Robotics for All" by "ABC Daycare," your title would look like this:

Application Title: SC, Robotics for All, ABC Daycare

***

Q: Can multiple educators be listed in an application?

A: Yes. For example, if three fourth grade teachers from the same building are interested in applying for the same program, all of the educators should be listed within one application.

***

Q: Our application includes three educators applying for the Program Name; however, one educator requires only professional development. How should this be noted in the application?

A: A new feature has been added to the 2025-26 Scale-Up application. To clearly indicate that one educator only needs professional development in the application, follow these guidelines.

Detail in the Educator Information Section:

  • In sections where you list the educators, clearly state the distinction. For instance:
  1. Educator 1: Enter educator name, title, etc..
  2. Educator 2: Enter educator name, title, etc..
  3. Educator 3: Enter educator name, title, etc. Then check the box "PD only"

Include in the Additional Comments Section:

  • In the additional comments section, explicitly mention that one educator will only participate in professional development. For example:
  • "Educator 3 will participate in professional development sessions only and will not require materials or other program components."

***

Q: I would like to apply but we have not hired the educator who would teach the program.

A: No worries. The application allows you to include a 'placeholder' educator. However, before implementing the program, the placeholder must be replaced with the name of an actual educator.

Wanted: Externship Teachers and Hosts

The Iowa STEM Teacher Externship Program aims to help teachers answer that age-old question: When will I ever use this?

During the summer, STEM educators work side-by-side with knowledgeable and skilled industry employees who help bring the classroom curriculum to life. STEM Teacher Externships provide educators with the exposure to answer questions about real-world application, prepare students for careers they may have in the future and improve educational experiences.
