An Excerpt from Trevor Gardner
Prior to participating in the academy, I thought we were only going to learn about different forms of energy and how society consumes energy. I was pleasantly surprised we learned a multitude of exciting ways to understand energy sustainability, professional skills, and how business logistics operate. As we learned these valuable skills, we were able to put them to use by creating elevator pitches, business proposals, and wardrobe ideas dedicated to professional events. We looked forward to presenting our ideas to the other students, mentors, and business executives. By the end of the summer program, I gained a plethora of knowledge about energy and how the energy industry works. I also developed my future career path to work in a sector of energy and contribute a positive change to how we as a society think about and use energy.
In addition to being an Ambassador I participated in several webinars such as: resume building, talking to a panelist of college students, and building solar gingerbread houses. These events allowed me to engage with like-minded young women and career professionals that offered advice and guidance on how to be proficient and excel in any career field. My experiences with the Exelon STEM Academy not only allowed me to figure out my career path but it also helped me become a well-rounded young woman who will be prepared, confident and assured when entering a male-dominated workforce.
For that, I am appreciative and cannot wait to further my journey with Exelon.
The Exelon STEM Academy offered an abundance of opportunities to stay involved with the organization after completing the summer program. For the past two years, I enjoyed being an Exelon STEM Ambassador and connecting with the community through schools, libraries, and community centers. It was a pleasure teaching participants ages eight to eighty about energy and how it affects our daily living. Recently, I served as an assistant to the “Teach the Teachers” workshop. It was a joy to see the teachers' excitement and enthusiasm to learn interactive activities that they would use in their classrooms. Being a STEM Ambassador helped me to network, build my confidence in public speaking, and overall develop leadership and planning skills.
