The race to develop an effective and safe vaccine for COVID-19 is a top priority across the world. While the time frame in which a vaccine will be ready is still uncertain, what is encouraging is that many of the scientists at the forefront of its development are top-notch, fiercely smart women. For example, a team led by Professor Sarah Gilbert at the University of Oxford was among the first in the world to move into human trials with a potential vaccine. In the United States, Indian-American biologist Dr. Nita Patel leads a team that she estimates can make a vaccine within 18 months. And, at just 34 years old, Dr. Kizzmekia Corbett, an immunologist with the National Institutes of Health, is leading the American government’s efforts to develop a vaccine.
