A group of 6th graders from École catholique Edouard Bond participated in the Climate Action Youth Forum hosted by LSF in Ottawa. During the forum, they were given a $500 grant to conceptualize and execute a project aligned with the conference theme. Their project targeted packaging and plastic reduction. They wanted to reduce the carbon emissions associated with their lunches.
They started by teaching 5th and 6th graders on how to make energy balls. These were chosen for their suitability as a sustainable alternative to individually wrapped granola bars. Also, not only do these snacks require no cooking, but they also filled with healthy ingredients. They initially set out to make enough to sell at the parent-teacher conferences. Students loved how they tasted and started creating them at home. With the collaboration of school families, they are aiming to promote awareness of this issue, and reduce packaging waste in the entire school.
Additionally, this group of students had the opportunity to present their project at LSF's latest professional development for Sustainable Future Schools that was hosted at their school. We are very proud of their efforts!

Immerse yourself in the essence of Earth Day 2024, "Planet vs Plastics." This year's theme underscores the critical need to address the pervasive issue of plastic pollution, challenging communities to reevaluate their relationship with single-use plastics. Join the movement to protect our planet by actively participating in events and activities that prioritize sustainability and reduce our reliance on harmful plastics.
Ideas for Schools:
Plastic-Free Campus Initiatives: Spearhead initiatives to eliminate single-use plastics in your school. Implement plastic-free policies, promote reusable alternatives, and involve students in the development of sustainable practices.
Plastic Art Installations: Channel creative energy into constructing art installations made from recycled plastics. These visually impactful creations serve as a reminder of the environmental impact of plastic waste and the importance of responsible consumption.
Upcycling Workshops: Host workshops that encourage creativity through upcycling and repurposing materials. This not only promotes sustainability but also enhances students' awareness of waste reduction.
Plastic-Free Lunch Challenges: Encourage students to adopt plastic-free lunches for a designated period. Promote the use of reusable containers and utensils, fostering a culture of sustainable consumption.
Plastic Reduction Pledges: Facilitate a school-wide campaign where students, teachers, and staff pledge to reduce their personal use of plastics. Track progress and celebrate achievements in collectively minimizing plastic consumption.
By aligning Earth Day 2024 activities with the "Planet vs Plastics" theme, schools can actively contribute to the global effort to combat plastic pollution and foster a sustainable future for our planet. Visit the Earth Day website for more inspiration!

K to 6 – A Million Bottles a Minute
A Million Bottles a Minute is an educational program designed to raise awareness of the single-use plastic issue. The resource provides students with an overview of the plastics problem through a variety of engaging and hands-on activities. Students learn about its impact, widespread existence, and ways they can make a difference and become part of the solution to the problem. The resource includes eight activities to help teachers educate and engage students on the importance of the global plastics issue.
Grade 3 to 6 – Oceans Plastic Education Kit
The Ocean Plastic Education Kit provides a variety of lesson plans, activities and resources to bring ocean literacy into the elementary classroom to educate, equip and empower students to be ocean stewards. Through these activities, students will learn about the socio-economic and scientific factors contributing to the omnipresence of plastics and the environmental footprint of plastics. They will then acquire the skills, tools, and knowledge to break the plastic pattern and help protect and restore our ocean from plastic pollution.
Grades 4 to 8 – LSF’s Reusable Bags Action Toolkits
Reusable Bags is a series of interesting activities through which students become acquainted with the concept of reusing. The resource emphasizes reducing and reusing over recycling. Students take action to decrease the number of plastic bags in circulation by constructing their own reusable bags using old clothing items. The resource includes an introduction and is divided into four parts: preparatory activities, a bag-making day, follow-up activities and further opportunities for promoting reuse.
Grades 9 to 12 – Ocean Trash Talk
Ocean Trash Talk is a one lesson resource that helps introduce the problem of plastic in the oceans. During this lesson, students will be able to identify ways that our use of plastic is harming the ocean and will be able to brainstorm and complete specific actions to address the problem.
