Cedar Hollow Public School, London, ON: Sustainable Hydraulic Machine Prototypes

This month, we are highlighting the impressive work done by Grade 8 students at Cedar Hollow PS, in London Ontario.During the last term, they tackled the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) in a hands-on, meaningful way. These awesome students designed and built a flood-controlled garden with solar energy and a tiered garden with solar energy.

Both gardens have fantastic sustainable benefits. The flood-controlled garden manages stormwater, prevents flooding, and generates clean energy. The tiered garden optimizes space and integrates solar power, promoting sustainable living. Both of these projects serve as great examples of how communities can manage resources, generate clean energy, and adapt to climate challenges.

Turn down the heat and put on your coziest sweater to raise awareness about energy conservation and climate change.

Join the World Wildlife Fund to raise awareness about climate change and energy conservation and participate in the National Sweater Day on February 6th by registering your students for the event.

Elementary -Everyday Energy

Through various activities, students learn about different energy sources and how much power they consume daily. They learn how much their daily lives depend on all different sorts of energy. They will describe ways in which they use energy at home, and suggest ways they could help conserve energy. Students will also reflect upon all the activities they do throughout the day that require electricity, and how life would be different without it.

Middle Years- Energy Revealed Program

The Energy Revealed program explores ways to make energy visible in schools and in our homes. Whether learners are using installed energy metering technology, plug-in energy metering technology or no technology at all – Energy Revealed will help learners become energy efficiency experts. The program includes junior (grades 3 - 8) and senior (grades 9 - 12) streams for age-appropriate activities and resources, together with an Energy Revealed Challenge to take real world action for tackling climate change through energy efficiency!

Secondary Years- Decoding Global Goal 7: Ensuring Access to Affordable, Reliable, Sustainable and Modern Energy for All

The main goal of this lesson is for students to distinguish between renewable and non-renewable energy sources. They will also take a close look at how young people from around the world are using their creativity to come up with new solutions to try and protect our planet from the issues related to energy. Students will identify the Global Goals (SDGs) which benefit from the provision of access to clean energy.

Riddle me this!

I flow through the land, from mountains to sea,

In Canada's vast rivers, I’m wild and free.

I generate power, with force and with might,

A clean energy source that shines ever so bright.

What am I?
