Resource Picks of the Month

Grades K-2: Explorers for the Global Goals - Explorers for the Global Goals allows younger students the opportunity to explore simple concepts around global issues and develop skills for life. The activities in the resource introduce students to the SDGs through guided discussions and shared learning experiences based on play. The activities incorporate multiple opportunities for students to demonstrate their creativity while exploring concepts like peace, nature and home. Many of the activities encourage children to engage with nature, in order to foster an appreciation of the natural world and the importance of protecting it. Link to Teacher’s Guide.

Grades K-6: Working Together to Achieve the Global Goals

This activity and discussion session helps students understand the importance of the United Nations Global Goals for Sustainable Development, which are to improve the quality of life for all people worldwide. Students will begin by creating a list of basic needs to survive. They will complete seven different types of puzzles, each with a picture representing different theme areas from the Global Goals. This activity aims to demonstrate that, while some students have all they need, others may be lacking. The only way to complete all the puzzles is for everyone to work together. They will brainstorm ways in which we can work together to start achieving the Global Goals.

Grades K-12: Teaching with the UN Sustainable Development Goals Discussion Kit

This resource emphasizes how the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) offer cross-curricular relevancy and invaluable learning opportunities for students to discover their crucial role in solving local, regional, and global problems. Teachers explore how they can engage students to become active global citizens and authentically address global issues in empowering and hopeful ways.

This discussion kit contains a total of three group discussion and self-reflection guides covering topics ranging from creating a to-do list to help K-12 educators take action on the SDGs in the classroom; taking a whole-school approach to teaching the SDGs, and making your school culture the catalyst for change, and using outdoor education as a way to build students’ awareness of and appreciation for biodiversity.

Grades 3-5: Frieda Makes a Difference – The SGDs and How You Too Can Change the World

This children’s book aims to raise awareness of the SDGS in a fun, colourful and relatable way. Frieda is a young girl who embarks on a wonderful adventure to bring about positive change in the world. The Sustainable Development Goals can be complex and diverse topics to teach younger children. This book serves as an excellent introduction to the Sustainable Development Goals and encourages younger students to take action and make a change in the world around them. Students learn more about the objectives of the SDGs and suggestions on what they can do to make a difference in their lives and those around them.

Grades 6-8: What World Do You Want in 2023?

This resource has students envision a world where the Global Goals have been achieved. The resource begins with an activity designed to provide an entry point to the Goals, either one Goal or a theme from the Goals. Students view an animation to learn more about the goals and connect them to their personal lives. During the main activity, students will draw connections between the Global Goals and their own lives. Students will turn their learning into action by taking a personal pledge and sharing it with the class and family. Teachers can input their lesson onto the World’s Largest Lesson interactive map to show the class how many lessons are happening around the globe!

Grades 9-12: SDGs in Action

This mobile app serves as a ‘go to place’ for information, updates and progress reports regarding the 17 Sustainable Development GoalsStudents learn about the 17 SDGs, get news on their favourite goals and can set preferences to receive the latest news on only those goals that are of particular interest to them. For students and teachers looking for easy and immediate access to descriptions and targets for all of the goals and to find out what’s being done locally and globally to achieve them, this app should be of particular interest. The platform also provides an effective mechanism for promoting and garnering support for the students' own SDG action initiatives.
