SFS Event March:

World Water Day (March 22)

World Water Day celebrates water and raises awareness of the many people living without clean drinking water.

This year's theme is Accelerating Change to solve the water and sanitation crisis. Sustainable Development Goal 6 goes beyond clean water, sanitation and hygiene to also address the quality and sustainability of water resources, which are critical to the survival of people and the planet.

We are currently off-track to meet Sustainable Development Goal 6: water and sanitation for all by 2030. Billions of people and countless schools, businesses, healthcare centres, farms and factories don't have the safe water and toilets they need.

To accelerate change, we need more action. March 22 is World Water Day, where we celebrate water and raise awareness about the water crisis. You and your students can make a difference by changing how you use, consume and manage water. Be the change you want to see in the world; water affects everyone, so we need everyone to take action.

Resource Picks of the Month

This month's theme focuses on water. Explore the resources below to get the learning flowing in your class.

Grades K-2: Water Splash: An Early Years Education Pack about Water

This resource helps young children explore the essential role that water plays in their lives, the availability of water to children in parts of the developing world, and the choices they can make concerning responsible water use.

Grades 3-5: Clean Water for All

This resource aims to increase students' understanding of the various causes of water pollution and to raise awareness of the global inequality of access to safe water around the world.

Grades 6-8: Water and Sanitation for All: Bringing the Issue Home

A three-lesson plan resource designed to raise awareness of the issues facing children with inadequate access to clean water or sanitation facilities.

Grades 9-12: Tapped Out: The World Water Crisis

This resource explores many international debates

surrounding water. Is water a commodity or a human right? Should it be managed privately or publicly? What are the current and future threats to water? Students research current issues surrounding water from a Canadian and an international perspective. Several exercises allow them to experience the emotional issues surrounding water through role play and discussion.
