Grades K-4: World Food Day Activities
World Food Day resources provide activities, children’s books and a poster contest to increase students’ awareness of world hunger and poverty and inspire solutions for world change. Learn more about food heroes who work to produce healthy and sustainable food.
Grades 3-6: World Food Day Teaching Resources
This is a very engaging resource package that will focus the attention of young learners on the issue of food security. Through discussion and activities based on stories told by three children from developing nations, students will learn the different reasons why people go hungry around the world and what steps might be taken to address the problem.
Grades 7-9: Food Waste: Investigations in Numeracy
According to the UN World Food Program, over 270 million people worldwide are suffering from extreme hunger and yet approximately one-third of the food that is produced on an annual basis is wasted. This lesson introduces students to the environmental, social and economic issues associated with food waste by highlighting the amount of food items that are discarded every day in schools. As the class collects lunch time data from peers, they will gain insight into the level of waste at a local level.
Grades 9-12: The Environmental Impact of Wasted Food
In this lesson students will learn about the environmental consequences of food waste and what they can do about it. The core lesson presents students with a video and print articles describing the causes, environmental consequences and possible solutions to this urgent, global problem. Guiding questions, concept webs and a ‘hands-on’ activity are provided to help students consolidate information. Specific attention is given to the roles of technology and the media in addressing the issue.
