Collicutt School, Winnipeg, MB: Paper Towel Free School

After attending LSF's Climate Action Youth Forum, the Grade 5 students at Collicutt school decided to reduce paper towel use at their school.

They collected data and were surprised to find out how much paper towel went to the landfill each week. They decided that instead of just reducing the amount of paper towels used, they wanted to completely eliminate paper towels and replace them with cloth hand towels.

The students did research on: the life cycle of a paper towel; the hygienics of towel washing; colour coding the towels; towel pricing; and where to order the towels from. Working with the grade 2/3 classes they presented their combined research and plan to all the classrooms.

By switching to cloth hand towels, the school significantly reduced the amount of waste sent to the landfill.

As we kick off the new school year, we’re excited to focus on sustainability through active transport! Throughout September, we encourage teachers, parents and students to start this year on the right foot (pun intended) and to set school-wide goals for using the most sustainable methods of transportation to school. The intention is to integrate these activities into our daily routines. These efforts will be further emphasized in October with the “I walk to school International Day” to raise more awareness and build enthusiasm for walking!

Check-out this step-by-step school travel planning guide for your community.

Our newsletter equips you with more impactful resources and lessons to help you plan around these topics. See below our thoughtfully curated resources pick of the month.

Prepare to Participate in an “Active Transport Challenge” in October:

Active & Sustainable Transport Challenge

Elementary – Our Environmental Footprint - Transportation Situation

This resource uses active learning to teach young children concepts associated with understanding their ecological footprint.  Students explore how people move around their community and consider how travel choices may impact the environment.

Middle Years - Getting to School the Green Way

In this hands-on activity students conduct a class survey to identify modes of transport to school and use this information with Google Maps to calculate distance and duration of various routes and travel methods.  As pupils compare options such as walking or driving, they will develop their understanding of how active transportation choices can support a healthier planet and healthier people.

Middle/Secondary – LSF’s No Idling Action Toolkit

After learning about the negative effects of vehicle idling, students monitor traffic at their school to determine if idling is an important local issue. Students analyze their data and assuming idling is an issue, document their findings through movie shorts or a photography project in an effort to educate the school community and help bring about behavioural change. Once projects are ready to go, students organize a showing of their work and later try to determine the effectiveness of their message on their audience. (Bilingual)

You can find all of these resources and more on the R4R.ca website. R4R.ca provides immediate access to more than 1800 quality classroom resources and connects teachers to lesson plans, books, videos and other materials that explore the environmental, social and economic dimensions of important issues and events unfolding in our world today.

Reducing the carbon where people sit.

Electric or shared, I lead the way,

What kind of travel makes Earth smile today?”
