Welcome back STEPS community! With the school year off and running, this month we’re bringing you a snapshot of fall learning opportunities and resources to help you stay connected.
We’d also like to give thanks to you as STEPS partners for all that you’re doing for your schools and communities in spite of this year’s challenges. STEPS partners are truly innovating and using solutions to more meaningfully partner with and serve students and their families.

New Trauma Engaged Tools: Transforming Schools Webinar Series
|

For school district staff, school board members, and families
Get familiar with the newly launched “Transforming Schools Toolkit,” an online companion guide to the "Transforming Schools: A Framework for Trauma Engaged Practice in Alaska".
Starting September 15th, Association of Alaska School Boards and the Department of Education and Early Development are offering weekly webinars and discussions for school district staff, school board members, and families.

Extra Support for Students: Virtual Fall Study Group

Wednesdays, Sept. 2 - Dec. 16

4:30 – 6:30 p.m. (6th-12th grade)
Open to AN/AI students
Tlingit & Haida’s Navigators program is offering a virtual Zoom study group for AN/AI students (6th-12th grade) in any STEP community. Tutoring, homework coaching, and one-on-one sessions are available to help students get the most out of their school year.

Southeast Youth
Youth are invited to join TongassTime for a distracting Hour of Entertainment with culturally relevant stories, entertainers, and performers. Filled with art, music, and weekly drawings for prizes, Tongass Time has been a welcome respite from the summer news headlines. Virtual Scholarship Workshop

Tribal Citizens (up to 24 years of age)
Joining Tlingit & Haida’s Navigator program for a scholarship workshop on the scholarship and FAFSA application process. Participants will get help identifying and applying for scholarships, as well as support writing cover letters and essays.

Conversations on Culturally-Responsive Education: SHI Lunch-and-Learns

Open to General Public
SHI is sponsoring a free virtual lunch-and-learn lecture series on culturally-responsive education. Designed to acquaint the public with culturally-responsive education in Southeast Alaska, the series will delve into the educational system as perceived through the Native worldview with the goal of unveiling the educational inequity and social injustices that have long been a part of the educational system and history in Alaska. The series will feature presenters who will speak on topics to help the community expand its understanding of the legacy of colonization and the impacts on education as it relates to Tlingit culture and history. The series is part of SHI’s goal to promote cross-cultural understanding.

Let’s Talk About… from Juneau Suicide Prevention Coalition and NAMI Juneau

During National Suicide Awareness Month, the Juneau Suicide Prevention Coalition and NAMI Juneau are hosting Let’s Talk About… a mini series of 21 informal and informative daily conversations about mental health and suicide prevention and providing local resources.

Alaskan Bridge To College

For High School Juniors, Seniors and anyone thinking about college
The Alaskan Bridge To College Program is designed to help people who are interested in going back to school improve study skills and gain the confidence to succeed in college. The program is designed to learn at your own pace and aimed at people who may not have studied for a while, who are working, raising children, fishing during the summer, putting up supplies for winter, and keeping important traditions alive.

For parents and caregivers of young children
The home visiting program and Parents as Teachers and the parent support group Circle of Security are now available virtually! That means any parents or caregivers of young children living in the STEPS communities (Yakutat, Angoon, Klukwan Hoonah, Hydaburg, Sitka, and Juneau) can benefit from these evidenced-based programs offered by AEYC-Southeast Alaska.
