Vet Med students get hands on instruction
The Veterinary Medicine class at Texas City High School had the opportunity to band a lamb during class recently. The lamb the students banded was a 2-week-old medium wool cross ewe. She will be a show lamb and that is why the students docked her tail short. Breeding lambs still have their tails docked but they are left a little longer. The tool the students used is called an elastrator. It places the band on the tail and it is a similar feeling as if you placed a rubber band on your finger. Junior Abby Burke and senior Skylar Bedford, both Vet Med students, were the ones who banded her. After a few weeks, the tail below the band will fall off. Teacher Nikki Ashcraft instructed the girls on where the bands should be placed. The students bottle fed her after the short procedure.

"It Matters" in Texas Public Schools
Although it has seen its share of changes throughout the years, a free, public education has long been the heart of Texas. In fact, the Texas Declaration of Independence in 1836 listed the failure of the Mexican Government "to establish any public system of education, although possessed of almost boundless resources" among reasons for severing political ties with Mexico. The Freemasons in the state of Texas initiated the celebration of Texas Public Schools Week (TPSW). The celebration is traditionally proclaimed in March in order to coordinate with the celebration of Texas Independence Day on March 2. Texas City ISD is celebrating the week of March 9-13, 2015. The theme established by the Texas School Public Relations Association is "It Matters". Blocker Middle School recently competed in the Celebrate Texas Public Schools video competition. Although they did not win the grand prize, they were named the Regional Finalist for the Houston/Beaumont Area. Congratulations to technology teacher Marilyn Sealy and her students for their video production. Check out their video here. Drinking and driving program set for TCHS students prior to Spring Break
Texas City High School students will get a special presentation tomorrow from WhenSeanSpeaks, Inc. The organization is dedicated to spreading the word of how important it is to think before you get behind the wheel of a car. It is just as important to be careful of whose car you get into as a passenger. Sean and his mother, Jenny, have taken their message to tens of thousands of young people to help prevent drunk driving and to make people aware of the consequences of their choices. Sean Carter's journey into his new life started at the crash site in Wichita Falls, Texas, during the wee hours of Sunday, March 27, 2005. At the time of his motor vehicle crash, Sean was a student at Midwestern State University majoring in Business Administration. He was the passenger in a truck, driven by a college friend who was drunk. As the truck spun and slammed into a tree, Sean's journey began. Sean suffered multiple fractures, internal injuries, but worst of all a traumatic brain injury. Sean is now well down the path of his new life. Although he has forgotten how to walk and talk, Sean continues to make progress. He suffers no obvious cognitive deficits. Sean has immediate rapport with everyone he meets. People are drawn to Sean's radiant smile, his quick wit, and his power to communicate. Sean cannot speak, but he can communicate via computer. This powerful presentation will happen at 9:15 a.m.

Blocker students medal at One Act
Congratulations to Micah Mannie for a Silver All-Star Cast Award and David Dozal for an Honorable Mention All-Star Cast Award at the recent UIL One Act Play competition for middle school. Blocker Theatre Director Sagina Varghese said, "The judge enjoyed Blocker Middle School's production of the play Of Poems, Youth & Spring by John Logan. Additionally, he remembered directing it himself as his first UIL One Act Play (OAP) about 40 years ago, so we were glad when he told us that he was impressed with our production's creative sound design, choreography, costuming, set design and overall interpretation of the play." Blocker will perform this UIL OAP show for Texas City as a part of the Blocker Spring Theater Showcase on Tuesday, April 28 at 7 p.m. in the Blocker Auditorium. The public is invited.
