Urgent Action Needed to Protect the Santa Rita Mountains
Help protect one of Southern Arizona’s most iconic landscapes
Save the Scenic Santa Ritas is urgently calling on Southern Arizonans to help stop the Arizona State Land Department’s April 29 auction of 160 acres of State Trust Land. The parcel has been requested by Toronto‑based Hudbay Minerals for use as a toxic waste dump tied to its proposed Copper World mine.
Pima County has repeatedly opposed Copper World and its predecessor, the Rosemont project, passing four resolutions over the past 20 years. Despite these objections, State Land Commissioner Robyn Sahid has declined to withdraw the auction, where Hudbay is expected to be the only bidder.
According to Save the Scenic Santa Ritas, allowing the sale to proceed raises serious concerns about long‑term impacts on Southern Arizona’s water, economy, and environment. The organization warns that the mine could significantly deplete groundwater and threaten the Santa Rita Mountain watershed, which supports communities, wildlife, and Tucson’s water supply.
