Energy Storage: A Cornerstone for Clean Energy Goals
Energy storage is vital in achieving New York State's energy and climate aspirations. With the Climate Act setting an initial 3,000-MW energy storage goal for the state by 2030, PSEG Long Island aligns its efforts with the evolving targets. Governor Kathy Hochul's doubling of the goal to 6,000 MW underscores the urgency, officially adopted by the New York State Public Service Commission. PSEG Long Island's current connected energy storage of 27 MW sets the stage for expansion, with plans to add 4.5 MW by the end of 2023.
To meet the state's targets, PSEG Long Island focuses on existing and new projects, with a commitment to delivering a minimum of 175 MW of new projects by 2025. These initiatives are pivotal in enhancing grid efficiency, integrating clean energy, and ensuring reliability during outages. The utility embraces the New York Energy Storage Roadmap, addressing retail rates, utility programs, direct procurement, market incentives, and "clean peak" actions. PSEG Long Island actively pursues additional bulk energy storage through a 2022 RFP, targeting service commencement by December 31, 2025. Complementing large-scale storage, customer-sited energy storage, exemplified by the BTM Storage with Solar completed in 2021, supports state goals, with residential incentives offered from Q3 2023.
Electric Vehicles: Accelerating Sustainable Transportation
Recognizing the transportation sector's significant role as the second largest GHG emitter, PSEG Long Island aligns with New York State's vision for a cleaner, electrified future. With the state targeting 850,000 electric LDVs by 2025, a mandate for all new passenger vehicles to be zero-emissions by 2035, and complete electrification of light-duty fleets, school buses, and new MHDV sales by 2045, PSEG Long Island's initiatives are strategically positioned to drive EV adoption.
The utility's Transportation Electrification Team, established in 2022, plays a pivotal role in realizing these objectives. Focusing on the EV Make-Ready Program, PSEG Long Island aims for 178,500 EVs on Long Island. Since 2018, the utility has implemented diverse projects in Transportation Electrification, demonstrating a commitment to a sustainable and electrified transportation landscape.
PSEG Long Island's proactive approach extends to incentive programs, affordable rates, and infrastructure support, ensuring a seamless transition for customers adopting EVs. The proposed Fleet Make Ready Program prioritizes projects in Disadvantaged Communities, while the Residential Charger Rebate Program offers increased incentives for eligible Low- to Moderate-Income customers. The utility's Transportation Electrification Team remains agile, with plans to expand and enhance efforts for customer awareness through initiatives like Customer Journey Mapping, webpage updates, targeted education, outreach, market research, and collaborative endeavors.
Looking Ahead:
As PSEG Long Island charts its course toward a cleaner and more sustainable energy future, the utility's commitment to energy storage, electric vehicles, and transportation electrification positions it as a leader in shaping New York's clean energy landscape. With a keen focus on innovation, collaboration, and customer-centric solutions, PSEG Long Island sets the stage for a resilient and low-carbon future, aligning seamlessly with the state's clean energy goals.
