Next Step

In the month of September, Next STEP is all about trying something new. Each week in Next STEP, one participant will get to pick an activity that they would like to learn and then they will do some research on the sport, game or leisure activity, and then they will present that activity to the group.  The culmination of the activity will be to go out in the community to try that new activity!

Also in the month of September we are learning about healthy living. We will incorporate as much as possible regarding making healthy choices including, nutrition, exercise, friendships and other social situations such as alcohol awareness.  We will also begin to reap the harvest of our community garden with Kaplan and learn new and fun recipes that we can use with what we've grown!

The month of September Next STEP will be busy and filled with learning new things. Here in Next STEP we always keep it fun and exciting!

Next STEP is a great option offering quality curriculum for those who are on a waiting list for other services, in combination with other services or for those who may not qualify for other services.  Please contact Betsy Morrison at bmorrison@pslservices.org or 207-774-6278 if you would like more information regarding Next STEP or would like to schedule a tour. Part-time and full-time options are available.
STRIVE U

The STRIVE U students have been enjoying the beautiful summer days. While the students are not hard at work in the classroom or learning about independent living on campus, they are exploring the many fun areas around the coast of Southern Maine. Summertime offers many opportunities for the students to get off campus and get to know the community with their peers. Recently, the students planned a Saturday trip to Funtown Splashtown. Many STRIVE U alumni joined in on the fun as well. It was a fun and memorable trip for both STRIVE U staff and students. The students are also planning a trip to Old Orchard Beach in the near future as well. These outings offer a great opportunity for the students to socialize with their peers in a fun environment!

Please plan to visit STRIVE U for our annual Open House which is scheduled for Sunday, October 1st from 10:00-2:00. This is a great opportunity to see the campus first hand, talk with staff and tour an apartment.

Applications for the class of 2020 will be available at this time! For more information about STRIVE U please contact Bill Hughes, STRIVE U Admissions Coordinator, at 207-774-6278 or bhughes@pslservices.org

TOPS

TOPS wrapped up our 6-week Extended School Year program this month.  Each of the 13 students who will attend TOPS in the 2017-2018 school-year took part in the summer program to help guide them through the transition and maintain the skills from their sending schools.  The summer session is designed to help students learn the expectations in TOPS and serves as a review of topics that will be further discussed throughout the year.  This summer, our students worked on transportation skills, health and wellness, grocery shopping and budgeting and community participation. We also worked on physical fitness, healthy habits and social skills! The students got to know one another and jumped right into the STRIVE Community!

TOPS begins full time on August 30th with the typical Monday through Friday schedule.  We are looking forward to our the beginning of our third school year!

TOPS is a transition program for high school students in their 13th and 14th year of school.  Partnering with 16 school districts in York, Cumberland and Androscoggin Counties, TOPS is a leader in transition preparation for students as they work toward independence.  For more information, please contact Kelly Frey, TOPS Transition Specialist, kfrey@pslservices.org or 207-774-6278.

Bayside

Every day at STRIVE Bayside we have a morning and afternoon meeting. We use this time to check in about what we have been doing outside of program, if we have been keeping up with chores, eating healthy and doing social activities. We keep track of how many 'points' everyone has and at the end of the month the person with the most points is awarded MVP! There are 24 hours in one day and only 4 of those are spent at STRIVE Bayside which is why it is so important for us to work on our skills at home too! We have recently added a new question to our meeting, we have to break down what we ate for dinner into different food groups, if we know the correct food groups we get more points! Congratulations to Matt, Kris, Siobhan and Tyler for being the MVP/VIP last month, thanks for all your hard work at Bayside and at home!

STRIVE Bayside is a unique community supports program that is dedicated to exploring and increasing independence. Some of the goals we work on are grocery shopping, budgeting, cleaning, navigating the community, cooking and social skills. We run five days a week, Monday through Friday and have two daily sessions, 9:00-1:00and 1:00- 5:00. We offer full time (Monday- Friday) and part time (Tuesday, Thursday -or- Monday, Wednesday, Friday) options. We operate out of an apartment in down town Portland to simulate actual apartment living. If you would like more information about our program, or to schedule a tour please contact: Caroline Cole at 774-6278 or ccole@pslservices.org.

Tweens

August has been a pretty quiet month here at tweens, which means we've been getting to focus a bit more on creating new friendships in a smaller group setting. We had a fun water balloon fight and an awesome time learning to dance with the Portland Ballet! Check out our schedule for September!

STRIVE Night

August was an amazing month for STRIVE Nights. Just last week we had our Italian theme night- we had an amazing dinner donated to us from Anthony's Italian Kitchen, and we had a blast having our 'FIFA' foosball tournament.

September's theme night will be the popular STRIVE Idol!

Friday Nights at STRIVE, fondly referred to as "STRIVE Night," is a relaxed but fun evening of socialization for 15-24 year olds. New members welcome, and your first night is free!  For more information, contact Olivia at ofraioli@pslservices.org .

Camp STRIVE

Camp STRIVE is about to start it's final week on Monday! We can't believe how the summer has flown by. We had some amazing trips this month- we saw the animals at York's Wild Kingdom, checked out a bunch of local farms, saw a Sea Dogs game, went to the Topsham Fair and more, all while making new friends. Before camp comes to a close, we want to give an enormous thank you to our incredible camp counselors Emily, Deanna, Carly, and Lauren! We also had an intern with us all summer long named Katie. Each one worked so hard to make our summer camp into the fun, safe and amazing experience that it was. Thank you so much, ladies!

Our next vacation camp will be in November, so stay tuned for details this fall!

Camp STRIVE provides tween, teens and young adults, ages 11-24, with a supportive, safe, and active program during school vacations and throughout the summer. During each camp session, campers participate in activities including cooking, community trips, arts and crafts, games and physical fitness and of course social time! Campers are supported at all times by professional staff who have completed PSL's full training and are certified Direct Support Professionals.
