Dear HealthAdvocateX Community,
| |
I have to admit, I really had never heard about the term ‘trauma-informed care’ before we started to discuss it as a potential topic for our next XCenter. I am not a medical professional, but I remember that the topic of trauma came up during our health advocacy conference we hosted in 2019 (as our previous entity WASHAA) on the topic of Understanding Pain & Healing. Pain and Healing was a big topic for us to tackle and audience members asked about why trauma was not covered as part of it. At the time, we felt like we couldn’t cover EVERYTHING, and trauma was a deep topic on its own.
I am so pleased and proud that HealthAdvocateX has decided to present several sessions on trauma-informed care as an XCenter for our advocacy community to learn from and practice. We consider this information to be essential tools for all people who care and practice health advocacy to have in their toolbox.
Special thanks go to the HealthAdvocateX team who have been working on putting this XCenter together:
Beth Droppert, Malynnda Johnson and Lee Mulert
I hope you can join us for the LIVE, virtual kick off program on November 13! This will be YOUR opportunity to join in the discussion and questions about this complex topic. Don’t worry, if you can’t attend live, you will be able to view it, along with 4 other sessions On-Demand through our Classroom.

Community Conversation: The Difficult Patient Label and Impact on Care November 11
When: Nov 11, 2024 | 11am – 12pm (PT)
Where: Online via Zoom (Register Here)
Cost: FREE! Also available for 1.0 BCPA CE
In healthcare, the label “difficult patient” is often used, but mostly from the perspective of providers. Little is known about how patients themselves view this label and its impact on their care. This community conversation will dive into the stories and experiences of patients who’ve encountered this label. Dr. Johnson will discuss how patient’s perspectives often differ sharply from those of healthcare professionals and reveal how being labeled as “difficult” can harm their identity and the quality of care they receive. Join us as we unpack these insights and consider what they mean for patient advocacy and better communication in healthcare.

Research Opportunity for Clinical Oncology Directors/Coordinators
Researchers at the University of Michigan-Dearborn are studying how oncology programs formally or informally evaluate their adolescent and young adult (AYA; e.g., 15-39) patients’ social support needs. We’re looking for clinical oncology directors/coordinators, or medical (e.g., oncologist, nurse) or psychosocial (e.g., patient navigator, social worker, psychologist) oncology practitioners who are employed by an oncology program that treats AYA patients to participate in a 60-minute research interview. We’re working to shape future social support best practices, training, and resources for AYAs. Participants are compensated with a $75 gift card. You can learn more here.

Saying Goodbye to HIV/AIDS and Death with Dignity Pioneer Trudy James
We were sad to learn that good friend and colleague Trudy James died last month. Trudy was a longtime advocate in HIV/AIDS education and advocacy and did many extraordinary facilitation and education throughout her life. She was active in the local health advocacy Puget Sound (Seattle) community, and spent two years producing the film, Speaking of Dying, which grew out of her experiences with more than sixty end-of-life groups (over 600 participants) and from her desire to ensure that everyone knows a peaceful ending is possible. She screened the film throughout the Puget Sound area, Palm Springs, CA, Northwest Arkansas, Minneapolis, MN, and other locations, and continued offering one-on-one support for individuals, couples, and family members dealing with illness, grief, loss, and the end of life up until days before her own death. Inclusion, Diversity, Equity and Access (IDEA) Statement
OUR COMMITMENT
Approved by the Board September 21, 2022
Inclusion, Diversity, Equity and Access (IDEA) Statement
Our mission is to help people transform into active participants and partners in their own health care. To make this possible, we must advocate for inclusion, diversity, equity, and access (IDEA) for all individuals.
We recognize that:
- Racism is a public health issue that impacts various intersections and communities differently.
- Each person is unique and therefore experiences health care differently.
- Every individual deserves health advocacy regardless of their race, ethnicity, language, nationality, gender, sexual orientation, gender identity and expression, spiritual practice, financial status, education, geography, disability, mental and physical status, age, weight, substance use disorder or other factors.
- Our organization is uniquely positioned to raise awareness on IDEA in health and health care.
We are committed to:
- Raising awareness about the importance of IDEA in health and health advocacy in all aspects of care.
- Expanding diverse representation within our organization, expert presenters, and educational offerings.
- Intentionally messaging our values, sharing IDEA expectations for ourselves, affiliated advocates, and partnering groups.
- Creating space for respectful dialogue about representation, equitable access, and inclusive practices in health care and health advocacy.
- Educating our community and participating in opportunities about IDEA events and exercises to keep these issues in the forefront of our work.
- Implementing systems to ensure IDEA is pervasive in our organization.
We will reflect on our accomplishments with humility and grace. We will recognize our limitations and remain open to what we may not see or realize so that we can improve and or repair any harm.
