Looking Back: The Wheaton Revitalization Project, Delivered On Time and On Budget
|
September 2020 saw the reveal of MCDOT’s Wheaton Revitalization Project, one of the largest projects of its kind ever built by the County. The development of this innovative initiative was finalized on time and within budget, marking an important accomplishment worth remembering.
Montgomery County residents have been able to enjoy the new public areas, such as the Marian Fryer Town Plaza, and have benefited from the new Georgia Avenue gateway to Silver Spring. In addition to this, the new development has brought a state-of-the-art design that has contributed to the beautification of Wheaton.
"The Wheaton Redevelopment was a complex undertaking that required significant efforts by many, and we are happy that MCDOT successfully led this project to provide an active and vibrant new center for people who live and work in Wheaton. We appreciate the patience of the community throughout the construction project and are excited that this milestone has been reached with occupants moving into the building," said MCDOT Director Chris Conklin.

MCDOT Working Towards Safety For People With Vision Disabilities
|
The Montgomery County Department of Transportation (MCDOT) held a public online meeting at the beginning of the new year to discuss the challenges that people with vision disabilities face when using public transportation across Montgomery County.
Although there are already some existing accommodations put in place, MCDOT, utilizing feedback from stakeholders and the public, is seeking to create a toolkit to increase accessibility in sidewalks, bus stops and intersections. These recommended changes would provide a safer and less challenging experience for those with vision disabilities when accessing public roads and transportation.
The meeting was recorded for those who were not able to attend. Access it here to learn more.

Montgomery County High School Students Become Vision Zero Youth Ambassadors to Help Roadways Be Safer
|
A partnership between MCDOT and the National Organizations for Youth Safety (NOYS) will welcome 20 Montgomery County high school students to participate in making roads safer as Vision Zero Youth Ambassadors. The first part of the program will begin in March.
The program is part of the County’s Vision Zero initiative, which is dedicated to eliminating traffic-related severe injuries and deaths. Through a series of virtual meetings, students will receive road safety training, as well as have the opportunity to contribute to the development of their own safety campaign plan, which will then be presented to parents and community leaders.
Applications are currently closed, but the MCDOT and NOYS are excitedly waiting to engage with the selected student ambassadors and work together to create road safety plans that will benefit the community.

New Bill Introduced to Increase Pedestrian Safety During Snow Season
|
After experiencing a multitude of snow events during the 2021 winter season, County officials will introduce the “Shovel Our Sidewalks Act,” which will require MCDOT to clear snow from areas that receive high levels of pedestrian traffic.
This bill will reach areas of the community that previously had not been accounted for. In these areas, residents are forced to walk on busy roads due to large accumulations of snow and ice on sidewalks and bus stops, creating a particularly dangerous situation for pedestrians and drivers during extreme weather conditions.
“By taking a more active role in sidewalk snow removal, we will increase pedestrian safety and take one step closer to achieving our Vision Zero goal of eliminating traffic fatalities by 2030," said Councilmember Evan Glass, the main proponent behind the bill.
