Cranbrook Institute of Science will be closed beginning September 12, and will reopen to the public on Saturday, October 1. We have tons of exciting things happening this fall - we can’t wait to see you when we reopen.

SUE: The T. rex Experience | Opens October 1

SUE the T. rex is the most complete, best-preserved Tyrannosaurus rex ever found, and you’re invited to get to know SUE in this immersive and interactive experience for visitors of all ages! Explore SUE’s world like never before, and uncover the mysteries about the life of this fearsome fossil through cutting-edge scientific updates, large reconstructions of predator and prey, and a mesmerizing multimedia experience.


Tickets to SUE: The T. rex Experience are $10 for adults who are non-members and $9 for all Institute of Science Standard Members. Children 2-12 and individuals 65+ are $8 each. Enhanced members and children under 2 are free. Non-members must also pay general museum admission.

Members-Exclusive Preview: SUE: The T. rex Experience | September 30 | 10:00am - 10:00pm


Cranbrook Institute of Science members are invited to our exclusive members-only preview to visit SUE’s new digs. Exhibit highlights include: 

  • A fully articulated cast skeleton of SUE the T. rex: At more than 40-feet long and 13-feet tall at the hip, SUE is one of the largest Tyrannosaurus rex specimens ever discovered
  • Cast of a Triceratops skeleton
  • Full-scale, fleshed-out replica of a ferocious T. rex battling the duck-billed herbivore, Edmontosaurus
  • Crushed SUE skull cast
  • Digital and sense interactives 
  • Multimedia light show with full narration

Due to anticipated popularity of this event, we are asking members to pre-register for specific time slots before Friday, September 30. Time slots include: 10:00am - 12:00pm; 12:30 - 2:30pm; 3:00 - 5:00pm; 5:30 - 7:30pm; and 8:00 - 10:00pm.

Women Rock Science | October 12 | 6:00 - 9:00pm


Join us ✨in-person ✨ for our 5th annual Women Rock Science gala. Our women-led fundraising event aims to celebrate women in STEAM and ignite curiosity in children. Affording students in underserved communities access to STEAM education is one of the main goals of Women Rock Science. 


Funds raised through Women Rock Science support outreach programs, delivered by Cranbrook Institute of Science, to thousands of students across Michigan. This year, your support will mean: 


  • 35,000+ students will receive STEAM outreach programs in their classrooms, in-person, or virtually
  • 10 scholarships to the Institute’s first-ever, girls-only week-long museum career bootcamp
  • 25+ summer camp scholarships will be offered to girls interested in STEAM at Cranbrook Institute of Science.
  • An inaugural women in science lecture series

The 77th Annual Greater Detroit Gem, Mineral & Fossil Show | October 7 - 9 


The Greater Detroit Gem, Mineral & Fossil Show, presented by Cranbrook Institute of Science, is back for its 77th year! This family-friendly event will feature more than 70 vendors, including jewelry, gems and crystals, unique minerals, and authentic fossils. This year’s show will be held at Macomb Community College South Campus/Expo Center at 14500 E. 12 Mile Road, Warren, Mich. 


Show highlights include: 

  • Learn about rare and ancient fossils and the search for life on Mars with the Institute’s Curator of Earth and Space Sciences, Dr. Andrew Gangidine 
  • More than 40 display exhibits from museums and high-end collectors
  • Mineral Fluorescence Booth
  • Yooperlite glow rocks 
  • Hands-on kids activities, including panning for real gold and digging for fossils
  • The first 250 attendees each day will receive a free quartz crystal 
  • Experts will identify rocks and minerals from guests’ personal collections (free with admission)
  • Door prizes 
  • Wire wrapping jewelry demonstrations
