Superintendent's Message
Dear SUHSD Community:

With another great semester behind us and a new one beginning, I invite you to read this month’s newsletter that highlights one of our four goals of strengthening quality instruction by improving engagement and rigor for all students.

To bring the goal to life, and the accomplishments that sustain it, this month’s edition of the newsletter will share reports from our school sites, specifically, how they support goal one. Recently, the San Mateo Daily Journal wrote an article highlighting the amazing gains we had in our CAASP scores as a result of this goal at the District and school site level.

Finally, on a more personal note, after over 40 years of service, not including her time as a student in our district, my executive assistant, Sandy Rick, retired from the District.

During her time with us, Sandy exemplified everything that is right with our district in her commitment and dedication to our students and team members. I know that we will all miss her.

Let's make this second half of the school year memorable. Welcome back!

Sincerely,

Mary E. Streshly, Ed.D.
Superintendent, Sequoia Union High School District

In the Spirit of the New Year by Trustee Georgia Jack
In the spirit of the New Year, I now take stock of some of the work undertaken by the Sequoia Union High School board, the Superintendent, the staff at the district office, and the faculty and staff across all of our schools. We have undertaken a series of initiatives over the past year that put both equity and rigor at the heart of what we believe is mission-critical for our students as they pilot their lives through high school and beyond.

As the board president during this time, I am proud of my board colleagues and the Superintendent for being fearless, particularly when at times it can feel like there are binary options – in that either kids or adults win in the choices that are being made about programs...

Trustee Allen Weiner Selected as Board President
The District is delighted to announce that on December 11th, the Board reorganized and selected Trustee Allen Weiner to serve as President, Trustee Alan Sarver to serve as Vice President, and Trustee Carrie Du Bois to serve as Clerk. We would also like to thank former President Georgia Jack for her distinguished leadership.
After 42 years, Sandy Rick Says Farewell to SUHSD
After more than 40 years, one of the most beloved members of our Sequoia family has retired from our district.

Sandy Rick grew up in San Carlos and has been a staple in our district ever since attending and graduating from Carlmont High School. Soon after graduating from high school, Sandy first began her professional relationship with the District by serving as a substitute secretary to the Deputy Superintendent and to vice-principals at Menlo-Atherton, Woodside High School and Redwood High School.

During that time, Sandy's love of Sequoia grew even stronger leading her to pursue other opportunities within the District. Eventually, she transitioned into a part-time guidance counselor at Redwood High School where she devoted her time to helping support and nurture students. Always recognized for her work ethic and dedication, Sandy was promoted to serve as confidential secretary to Redwood's principal. Over time, she served three Redwood principals in that capacity.

Having established an even stronger reputation at Redwood, Sandy was recruited to the District Office to serve as the confidential secretary for the Assistant Superintendent of Administrative Services. As is always the case with Sandy, her reputation and work ethic propelled her to the Office of the Superintendent where she has served as confidential secretary for the last three district superintendents.

Besides her many professional accomplishments, Sandy will always be known for her willingness to help her colleagues and her strong relationship with our community.

Her experience, compassion, dedication, and love of our district make her an irreplaceable member of our team who will be sorely missed.

We wish Sandy the very best that retirement has to offer, and we want her to know that she will always have a home at the Sequoia Union High School District.
