10 Day Look Ahead: Renewal Project Construction Activities


The Stanford University Medical Center Renewal Project, which will expand Lucile Packard Children's Hospital, rebuild Stanford Hospital, modernize Hoover Pavilion, and replace School of Medicine laboratories, is underway. Below is a summary of the Renewal Project's anticipated construction activities, hours of activity, and any affected lane or road closures over the next 10 days. Potholing on Quarry Rd Near Hoover Pavilion


Potholing will occur next week in Quarry Rd near Hoover Pavilion in order to confirm utility placements. This work will require a lane closure on Quarry on the Hoover Pavilion side of the road between Sweet Olive Way and Palo Road. All other lanes will remain open to vehicle traffic.The sidewalk will also be closed and a pedestrian detour will be in place.


Bikes may share the road with vehicles during the lane closure. 


New Stanford Hospital Facility 

December 2012- 2018


Work is under way to construct the new Stanford Hospital facility in order to accommodate advances in medical technology, increase capacity, and meet new seismic safety standards. The 824,000 square foot hospital includes 368 individual patient rooms, state-of-the-art diagnostic and treatment rooms, an expanded Emergency Department, new employee parking structure, five gardens, walking trails and a meditation room. The new hospital is expected to be completed in 2017 and open for patient care in early 2018.

What to expect this weekend (11/9-11/10)

Hours of Construction Activity: 9 am - 6 pm


Former Garden Entry/D Pod: Concrete placement will occur in the former Garden area at Stanford Hospital & Clinics on Saturday, 11/9 from 9:30 am until 12 noon.


New Hospital and Parking Garage: Work to construct the new parking garage will continue this weekend.


Weekday work (11/11-11/15)

Hours of Construction Activity: 7 am - 6 pm; extended work hours on Tuesday, 11/12 from 6 am - 8 pm


Former Garden Entry/D Pod: Tunnel shoring pile installation will continue next week near Stanford Hospital & Clinics.


New Hospital and Parking Garage: Hospital Foundation pile installation and garage concrete placement will continue. A concrete pour is scheduled to occur on Tuesday, 11/12, from 6 am until 8 pm on the new parking garage site.


Dirt will be off hauled from the site as needed next week.


What to expect next weekend (11/16-11/17)

Hours of Construction Activity: 9 am - 6 pm


Former Garden Entry/D Pod: No work is scheduled to occur next weekend near the Garden Entrance.  


New Hospital and Parking Garage: Work to construct the new parking garage will continue next Saturday, 11/16. 


Lucile Packard Children's Hospital Expansion

August 2011-December 2016


The Packard Children's Hospital expansion, which will expand Packard's ability to care for children and expectant mothers, is under way. The new 521,000 square foot facility will add 150 patient beds, more healing spaces, and the latest medical technology. The Packard expansion is scheduled to open in 2016.


This week's activities:


What to expect this weekend (11/9-11/10)

Hours of Construction Activity: 8 am to 6 pm


On Saturday, 11/9, the project contractors will perform auger cast pile installations; mechanical, engineering and plumbing layouts; and basement decking installation.


No work is scheduled to occur on Sunday, 11/10.


Weekday work (11/11-11/15)

Hours of Construction Activity: 7 am to 6 pm, Dirt off-haul as needed from 4 pm to 12 am


On Wednesday, 11/13, construction trailers will be delivered behind the K Rail on the inboard lane of Quarry Road (at Welch) to support the Packard expansion project team. The first delivery will occur at 10:30 am and will be staggered to accommodate traffic flow. Flaggers will be present on site. The trailer deliveries are estimated to continue for four days. 


Shoring excavation, rebar installation, slab waterproofing, concrete formwork, auger cast pile installation and bench cutting work will continue on the Packard expansion site next week.  Rebar cages for auger cast piles will be delivered during the week.  All drilling work is being closely coordinated with the hospital and is not anticipated to cause noise or vibration.


The tower crane will be in use to install rebar columns and formwork. 


Dirt off haul may continue during the week from 4 pm until 12 am.


Access to the rear entrance of Packard Children's will remain open throughout construction although some egress detours will be in place.


What to expect next weekend (11/16-11/17)

Hours of Construction Activity: 12:01 am to 6 pm


A concrete mat slab will be poured on Saturday morning, 11/16, at 12:01am.


Construction trailer deliveries may continue behind the K Rail at Quarry and Welch roads.


No work is currently scheduled for next Sunday, 11/17.


General Reminders


Motorists: please be mindful of sharing the road with bicyclists. 


Consider alternatives to driving, including Stanford's free Marguerite shuttle, biking, carpooling, and transit. Try the do-it-yourself commute planning tool.


Cyclists: please be mindful of sharing the sidewalk with pedestrians. Those who choose not to share the road and use the sidewalks must walk their bicycles.


Pedestrians: must use the new designated crosswalks on Welch Road. Jaywalking is illegal and especially unsafe in active construction areas. Maps with new pedestrian crosswalks are available at Thank you!
