10 Day Look Ahead: Renewal Project Construction Activities


The Stanford University Medical Center Renewal Project, which will expand Lucile Packard Children's Hospital, rebuild Stanford Hospital, modernize Hoover Pavilion, and replace School of Medicine laboratories, is underway. Below is a summary of the Renewal Project's anticipated construction activities, hours of activity, and any affected lane or road closures over the next 10 days. New Stanford Hospital Facility 

December 2012- 2018


Work is under way to construct the new Stanford Hospital facility in order to accommodate advances in medical technology, increase capacity, and meet new seismic safety standards. The 824,000 square foot hospital includes 368 individual patient rooms, state-of-the-art diagnostic and treatment rooms, an expanded Emergency Department, new employee parking structure, five gardens, walking trails and a meditation room. The new hospital is expected to be completed in 2017 and open for patient care in early 2018.

What to expect this weekend (2/22-2/23)

Hours of Construction Activity: 9 am- 6 pm


Former Garden Entry/D Pod: A large crane will be installed in the Garden Entrance to facilitate pile installation on Saturday, 2/22.Tunnel excavation will continue. Noise and vibration inside of hospital are not anticipated. Two generators will be in use near the Garden Entrance to support construction efforts inside of the hospital over the weekend.


New Hospital and Parking Garage: New hospital rebar work may continue on Saturday, 2/22; concrete forming and rebar will continue on the parking garage site. Dirt off haul will occur on Saturday, 2/22.


Weekday work (2/24-2/28)

Hours of Construction Activity: 7 am - 6 pm


Former Garden Entry/D Pod: Tunnel excavation and shoring work will continue. A large crane will continue to facilitate pile instillation in the garden entrance next week.


New Hospital and Parking Garage: Hospital foundation pile installation, waterproofing, forming work, rebar and placement preparations for the foundation will continue. A concrete pour for the new parking garage is scheduled to occur on Thursday, 2/27.


What to expect next weekend (2/3/1-3/2)

Hours of Construction Activity: 9 am - 6 pm


Former Garden Entry/D Pod: Tunnel excavation and shoring work may continue on Saturday, 3/1.


New Hospital and Parking Garage: Work to construct the new parking garage will continue next Saturday, 3/1. 


Lucile Packard Children's Hospital Expansion

August 2011-December 2016


The Packard Children's Hospital expansion, which will expand Packard's ability to care for children and expectant mothers, is under way. The new 521,000 square foot facility will add 150 patient beds, more healing spaces, and the latest medical technology. The Packard expansion is scheduled to open in 2016.


This week's activities:


What to expect this weekend (2/22-2/23)

Hours of Construction Activity: 8am to 6pm; overnight concrete pour from 10 pm on 2/21 through 10 am on 2/22.


An overnight concrete pour is scheduled to begin on Friday, 2/21 at 10 pm and will continue through Saturday, 2/22.


Weekday work (2/24-2/28)

Hours of Construction Activity: 7 am to 6 pm; off hours dirt off haul may occur


Structural steel welding, waterproofing, rebar installation, concrete formwork and placement will continue on the Packard expansion site next week.  All work is being closely coordinated with the hospital and is not anticipated to cause noise or vibration. 


The North Tower Crane will be in use to install rebar columns and formwork.


The South Tower Crane will also be in use next week.


Access to the rear entrance of Packard Children's will remain open throughout construction although some egress detours will be in place.


What to expect next weekend (3/1-3/2)

Hours of Construction Activity: 8 am to 6 pm; crane installation between 6:30 am and 7 pm


An overnight mat slab concrete placement is scheduled to begin next Friday, 2/28 and continue through Saturday, 3/1. 


General Reminders


Motorists: please be mindful of sharing the road with bicyclists. 


Consider alternatives to driving, including Stanford's free Marguerite shuttle, biking, carpooling, and transit. Try the do-it-yourself commute planning tool.


Cyclists: please be mindful of sharing the sidewalk with pedestrians. Those who choose not to share the road and use the sidewalks must walk their bicycles.


Pedestrians: must use the new designated crosswalks on Welch Road. Jaywalking is illegal and especially unsafe in active construction areas. Maps with new pedestrian crosswalks are available at Thank you!
