August 2011-September 2013
One of the first steps in the effort to expand Packard Children's Hospital and rebuild Stanford Hospital includes utility work and surface improvements. The Welch Road Utility Project includes: replacing utility services and information technology infrastructure along Welch and Quarry Roads to serve the new hospital facilities once they are built; the widening of Welch Road; replacement of sidewalks, curbs and gutters; planting of new street trees and installation of planted medians and street lighting.
Note: Access to the Emergency Room will be maintained at all times.
This week's activities:
What to expect this weekend (8/4-8/5)
Hours of Construction Activity: 7 am - 5:30 pm
The City of Palo Alto will be pulling new wires in the Quarry/Welch intersection on Saturday. This work will require the use of one lane of traffic on Quarry between Welch and the Quarry Extension. The City will have flagmen present to regulate traffic flow through the intersection one direction at a time. Access to the Emergency Department will be maintained at all times.
Domestic, fire water and gas lines will continue to be installed on Ambulance Drive, the new driveway being constructed between 1101 Welch and the Blake Wilbur Clinic; electrical line work will occur on both Welch and Quarry Roads.
Chilled water line work will continue on Quarry Rd and in the Quarry Extension. Fine grading work will occur on Welch Rd between North Pasteur and AMC. Curb, gutter and sidewalk work will occur on both Quarry and Welch Rds. The driveway at 801 Welch Rd will be replaced over the weekend. Access will be maintained in and out of the property at all times.
Weekday work (8/6-8/10)
Hours of Construction Activity: 7 am - 5:30 pm
Welch Rd is now a one-lane, one-way road going West from Quarry to Pasteur Drive. This change will be in effect for two years. We thank you for your patience regarding this significant change and ask that you please adjust your driving route accordingly. South Pasteur Drive is now a two-way two-lane road. North Pasteur Drive is closed between Blake Wilbur Drive and Sand Hill Road.
K-Rail will remain in place on the inboard side of Quarry Rd (between Welch and continuing up to the Quarry Extension near the turn to the Emergency Department) in order to facilitate ongoing utility work. This reduces Quarry to a two lane, two direction road during this time. Access will be maintained to the Emergency Department at all times.
On Monday, 8/6, water shutdowns will occur during the day at 1110 and 1101 Welch. Temporary water lines will be in place for these properties during this time.
On Tuesday, 8/7, water shutdowns will occur during the day at 780, 800, 801 and 777 Welch. Temporary water lines will be in place for these properties during this time.
The Blake Wilbur parking lot has been paved and the fencing on the north side of the lot has been removed. The sidewalk replacement work that runs from AMC/Blake Wilbur Clinics adjacent to 801 Welch through to Welch is underway. Pedestrians are being detoured to the new Blake Wilbur Drive sidewalk as part of this detour to Welch Rd.
Work will continue to construct a new road near the Blake Wilbur Clinic and 1101 Welch Road. This road will ultimately serve ambulances from Welch Road into the New Stanford Hospital facility. Pedestrian detour signage is in place on Blake Wilbur Drive. Access to the clinics will be maintained at all times. Utility excavation (water, gas) will continue next to the Blake Wilbur Building. Note: this work is not vibratory compaction work.
The lower path at Packard Children's next to 777 Welch remains closed. This path should reopen in the next 7-10 days. The upper path alongside the Packard Children's main driveway remains open. Signage is in place to assist pedestrians.
