Urban Land Institute issues report on public space around forthcoming Morris Park Plaza
|
Check out the excellent Urban Land Institute “Reimagining Montefiore Einstein- #MorrisPark as a Transit-Connected Campus” recommending for Montefiore Health System to lead public space activation and management around the future MTA Metro North Morris Park Plaza Station and to more consistently engage with the community New York City Department of City Planning. MPBID strongly agrees with the following report recommendations regarding the management of the Morris Park Plaza:
"Explore interim opportunities to activate plaza. Engage with NYCDOT and its Plaza Program to create an interim plaza space prior to permanent improvements.
Conduct regular community engagement and outreach. Montefiore will benefit from more frequent and consistent engagement and communication with the surrounding community. Particularly as campus planning evolves, community outreach should remain a consistent priority.
Help shape the new station plaza. When the train station opens in 2027, Montefiore should have a plan in place to partner with Metro-North to activate and maintain the station plaza, and to influence its design and programming.
Create a district governance strategy. A district governance strategy will help Montefiore manage public spaces, including the station plaza, in a cohesive coherent manner. This work could be managed by Montefiore alone, or through the creation of a Business Improvement District (BID).
Initiate development adjacent to the station. If the City's rezoning is approved, Montefiore should work with a development partner to make the to sites closest to the station shovel-ready." (Source: ULI report)

MPBID Launches Large Scale Light Installation
"The Pulse" at Loreto Playground, funded by NYCDSBS
| |
MPBID launched in June “The Pulse”, a unique and the first of its kind large scale art and light installation in the Bronx! The installation is located on the south side of Morris Park Avenue, between Haight Ave and Tomlinson Ave, and is dynamic in nature, with colors that change periodically. "The Pulse" first color combination was a red, white and blue pattern, honoring the flag and saluting the National Puerto Rican Day Parade. Over the next weeks and months MPBID programmed the installation according to occasion - Juneteenth, Pride, etc. - , bringing light, joy and vibrancy to the corridor. We thank all businesses and community residents for the support! We thank New York City Department of Parks & Recreation NYC Department of Small Business Services NYC DOT Con Edison for cooperation and teamwork! We also thank News12 The Bronx and The Bronx Times for their coverage of this unique project.
"Reimagine the Cross Bronx" community engagement
The community engagement phase of the "Reimagine the Cross Bronx" initiative aiming to develop a community - driven vision for the future of the Cross Bronx Expressway, is soon coming to an end. Leading Bronx environmental advocate Nilka Martell, founder of Loving the Bronx initiated the campaign to #CapTheCrossBronx which resulted in a two million dollar study by State and City agencies. Nilka led on July 28 and 29 walks on the east Bronx section of the expressway, collecting community feedback and ideas. For all community members interested to learn more and provide input, please contact Loving the Bronx Nilka Martell at lovingthebronx@yahoo.com.

IMPORTANT REMINDER TO PROPERTY OWNERS REGARDING
ILLEGAL SMOKESHOPS COMMERCIAL TENANTS
| |
|
NYC Council Introduction 1001-B, now known as Local Law 107 of 2023, prohibits owners of commercial spaces from knowingly leasing to unlicensed sellers of marijuana or tobacco products, imposing fines of up to $10,000 on landlords for violations.
Under this new law, agencies that conduct inspections for unlicensed marijuana or tobacco sales and find such activity may provide written notice to the property owner requiring they ensure such unlicensed activity is ceased, serving as the basis of violation.
Any subsequent inspection that finds continued violation would make the landlord subject to a $5,000 civil penalty at first, and a $10,000 penalty for each subsequent violation. The commencement of an eviction proceeding shall be considered an affirmative defense for a landlord.
