To render this object, Benfer placed fixed a piece of blotter paper overlayed by carbon paper to the wall as a striking target. Action left mark- an imprint and some destruction to the paper's surface. One year's worth of tennis balls were used to create this work.

Van Coller works with various researchers who annotate his images of their sites of study. This is one of several works belonging to a series The 200 Year Decomposition Site; the work was made in the H.J. Andrews Experimental Forest, OR with scientists working there. Experiments at the forest are intended to be conducted for 200-years.

The collaborator on this image, Dr. Seyfried, specializes in forest soil and watershed processes. Her research is particularly interested in how below-ground interactions between fungal communities and soil chemistry affect soil dynamics and greenhouse gas production.
