DTM, Thanks for the trees!
The Aleppo pines on the Access Road near Lester died from lack of water (as many have). The neighborhood reached out to Department of Transportation and Mobility (DTM), who is responsible for the Campbell Access road spaces. The landscape division responded, repaired the irrigation system, and sent out their contracted provider, BrightView, to plant desert trees. The landscapers said it looked like all new lines had been installed, and they told a neighbor that they will make sure the timers are set correctly, and everything is working. Good news!
Petitions may be coming your way....
Mountain speed tables, speed bumps, traffic circles inside neighborhood
If you live near any of these dots, someone may be coming to your door to ask you to sign a petition for a traffic calming device.

To get a traffic safety device, 60% of the people near the proposed site must sign the petition-renters or owners. DTM determines the houses which must sign. The traffic calming site must be pre-approved by DTM (Department of of Traffic and Maintenance) These are the first steps!

Second step is that the Neighborhood Assn. must come up with the money to hire a licensed contractor.

Third step is your neighborhood Assn. will be deciding on which projects to take on first, and will begin to coordinate successful petitions. The June 22 meeting will discuss the issue. The meeting link is above if you wish to comment.
Remember!! The only way to get our roads repaired and fixed is for TDOT to hear from YOU! (520) 791-3154
Monument Sign at First/Grant - Thank You Rainbow Collective!
Thanks to the generous donation of $1500 from a neighborhood business, Rainbow Collective, Inc. and neighbor Michael Crawford, the monument sign at Grant and First will become a reality.

Currently finalizing permission from Department of Transportation and Mobility, which will then allow volunteers to install the sign.
TEP - Project Update
The Steering Committee of the Undergrounding Coalition continues to work on behalf of the neighborhoods and groups in the Coalition. As we move towards our third year of opposing the overheading of lines in TEP’s Kino to Demoss-Petrie 138kV Transmission Line Project, we want to provide you with an update:
1. Please see the home page on the Sam Hughes website, https://samhughes.org/ for an overview of the Coalition work to date and for a budget review.

2. We are initiating another fundraising campaign to assist with anticipated costs related to the ongoing efforts to underground lines. We believe the additional funds will be needed in the coming months, based on the budget review (see article referenced above).
There are two ways to donate:
               1. Donate button, Sam Hughes website: https://samhughes.org/
               2. Should you wish to send a check, Sam Hughes has created a special account and donations may be   sent to:
                         Sam Hughes Neighborhood Association
                         P.O. Box 42931
                         Tucson, AZ 85733-2931
Be sure to note on the memo line – TEP Project

Note: All funds will be deposited into the special account and will be spent only for expenses associated with the project. Thank you!

SUMMER - Paving-Mountain to Park to begin July-August
Everyone in the affected area should have received a letter at their address by this time. Preliminary work will begin the week of July 5, then cutting back trees, etc. the week of July 12. An arborist will oversee this part of the process. At the beginning of August, they will begin tearing up old asphalt, grade the road and lay down the new asphalt. Work is expected to be completed by the end of August. No Parking signs will be placed on affected streets 48 hours in advance of when crews are expected there. Parking will be prohibited at those designated times. Any vehicle in the way at that time, will be towed. If you live in the area, Mountain to Park, Chauncey to Grant, look for a letter, and keep it handy.
SUMMER - June 1st - Special number for Unsheltered
In response to the needs of unsheltered persons, the Mayor and Council directed the Department of Housing and Community Development to create a resource telephone line which will provide City residents information on available services and shelter. The phone line began service on June 1 and operates 24/7.

“This is a great resource for those assisting someone who needs help connect to resources they may not otherwise hear or know about,” said Brandi Champion, the City’s Housing First Program director.
The resource telephone number is (520) 791-2540.

SUMMER - Discharging water from Pools and Spas
The flyer below was developed to provide recommendations for appropriate disposal of pool and spa water. It is also available in Adobe Acrobat format here: Pool And Spa Instructions ( Español). Two types of discharges occur from pools and spas: filter backwash water, and high-volume discharges from completely or partially emptying a pool or spa. The water released from each activity must be handled differently. Backwash water commonly contains elevated levels of chlorine, pathogens and other potential contaminants that should not be released off-site.

If you have any questions regarding this notice, please contact the City of Tucson, Department of Transportation, Stormwater Management Section at (520) 791-4251 or by email at Stormwater@tucsonaz.gov
SUMMER - Unusual spike in water bill?
Have you ever noticed a spike in your water bill? This could be for several reasons, but the most common reasons for this can be prevented. Our conservation experts have found that leaky toilets and irrigation system failures account for over 80% of customers’ high bills.

A leaky toilet can waste around 200 gallons of water daily and irrigation systems can waste hundreds of gallons hourly due to leaks and incorrect scheduling. Compared to the average per person usage of about 80 gallons of water daily, these culprits can more than double or triple the use of the average residential water customer!

Remember that Tucson Water has inclining block water rates meaning that the more water you use, the more you pay. Undetected leaks accumulated for some time can place you in the next block rate, therefore increasing your water bill. If you do experience a high bill, you can request an adjustment once every three years.

If you do receive a high bill, or just want to run a leak inspection in your property to prevent one, follow the steps explained in the Smart Home Water Guide
If you have followed the steps outlined in the Smart Home Water Guide, and still can’t find the leak in your home, submit a High Bill Investigation or call the Tucson Water Solution Center at 520-791-3242 for more information.

SUMMER - Pilot Program overhead
On June 9, Ward III neighborhood leaders met with TPD to discuss a one month pilot program using drones to assist officers. The pilot will be conducted in Ward III.

Excerpts from info brochure: "The Tucson Police Department Unmanned Aircraft Systems (UAS) Program supports public safety operations in a responsible and transparent manner in order to safely protect the public, preserve the peace, reduce response times and increase overall quality of life in the community.

The purpose of the UAS Program is to assist the Police Department’s response to emergency calls for service. The program provides officers with critical and timely information, helping keep citizens safe. Drones are used during 911 emergencies or other calls for police assistance. The Tucson Police Department’s policies prohibit drone operators from intentionally
recording or transmitting images of any location where a person would have a reasonable expectation of privacy, such as private backyards or inside private buildings, except where authorized by a warrant issued by a judge or in emergency situations."

SUMMER - Safety
The high heat does not seem to bring out the best in people. Some advice based on some recent neighbor experiences:
LOCK YOUR CAR-EVEN IF YOU ARE "just running back for something you forgot" - be aware of your surroundings. A neighbor reports having keys stolen which were left in car with just this scenario.
REPORT ANY HATE MAIL/FLYERS Some neighbors have reported receiving hate mail flyers in their yards or mailboxes. The police have been informed and have picked up samples. TPD has a "hate crimes" division. If you received such a flyer, please report it to Lieutenant Belinda Morales, Belinda.Morales@tucsonaz.gov, Operations Division West, 520-837-7230 office or cell 520-589-8487. Better yet, if someone has a camera that captured the person distributing the flyer, please share with TPD.
SUMMER - Heat Alerts
It is expected to be extremely hot during the next few weeks. if you or someone you know needs relief, there will be cooling stations set up around the City.
SUMMER - Hints to conserve Water and Power
Beat the Peak … with Pete the Beak! For decades, Tucson Water and Pete have urged Tucson-area residents to conserve water. Now, Pete is asking us to work together to use less power between 3-7 p.m. during summer months.
It’s easy! Just five quick steps you can take between 3-7 p.m. in the summer can make a big difference:
  • Avoid using large appliances. That means doing laundry or running the dishwasher overnight or earlier in the day if possible.
  • Program your pool pump to run during the morning or at midday.
  • Set the thermostat to 78 degrees. In fact, you might consider pre-cooling your home. At noon, set your thermostat three degrees lower than your normal setting. Then, at 3 p.m., adjust your thermostat as high as your family can safely tolerate. This will avoid running the AC while your pre-cooled home slowly warms.
  • Use a ceiling fan to circulate the air and help you feel cooler. It also helps to close the drapes, shades and blinds where possible to keep out the sun’s radiant heat.
  • Grill outdoors or use the microwave at dinnertime to reheat meals you cooked earlier in the day.
SUMMER - Extreme Heat Precautions
“Heat waves kill more people than any other type of severe weather in the U.S.” reports Tanya Lewis in the Scientific American (7/22/21). “And climate change is making them more frequent and unpredictable.”

Here are three simple steps we each can take to reduce the risks to ourselves and our neighbors:
  1. Be neighborly: Get to know your nearby neighbors. It begins with saying, “Hello” and introducing yourself. It can extend much further, from friendly conversations on the sidewalk to backyard teas to block parties.
  2. Prepare your household: Check out our Household Checklist for Extreme Heat.
  3. Volunteer to be a contact person for neighbors on the block where you live.

Blue Barrel Contamination costs money!
The City is paying (you are paying) roughly $30,000 per month to Republic Services because of the level of contamination people are tossing into the blue recycle barrels. The contamination rate arriving in blue barrels at the material recycle facility is 29%. That means about a third of everything that goes into the barrels is not allowed. We’re charged for everything above a 15% rate. Please:
  • No plastic grocery bags or film (they tangle in the equipment).
  • No glass (instead take glass bottles and jars to glass drop-off site).
  • No garbage or food waste. Food containers can be lightly rinsed to recycle, but just throw it out if it's very dirty!
  • Leave labels on containers.
  • Bottle and jar caps and lids should be left on the container.
  • All recyclables go loose into the blue barrel, together - - no sorting! Please put them in individually, not inside a box or bag.
  • Do not flatten cans and bottles to ensure sorting equipment works properly
  • Cut or flatten corrugated cardboard boxes to fit in container. Remove plastic wrapping and liners
