AMAZING GRACE

One of the most sung songs in Christianity is Amazing Grace. It really expresses what God has done for us. Let us go a little deeper than the song.

When I think of the word “amazing” it means beyond what the natural mind could even comprehend. This is what “amazing” means to us. 

Just think about this. The Holy God that created the universe loved us more than we can think possible. He stepped out of time to come to earth and to come to each of us individually to save us from our sin. Now that is amazing! 

He came for the dirty, the broken, those deep in perversion, the drunkard, the liar, the thief, the adulterer, the murderer. Yes, it is amazing that He had love for each of us. He came to a fallen world and paid off the ransom for our souls that sin had bound us in. that truly is amazing.

Then if that wasn’t enough, he took our sin, our filthy lives, and exchanged it for his righteousness. There is no way to comprehend that kind of love. It truly is amazing.

Then there is grace. Grace simply means we get something that we did not deserve. In Romans 6:23 it tells us, “The wages of sin is death…” Yes, we deserve death, which is eternal separation from God, but the verse goes on to say, “…but the gift of God is eternal life through Jesus Christ our Lord.” We deserved death for our sin, but God gave us grace.

Romans 3:23 says, “For all [that includes you and me] have sinned, and come short of the glory of God.” Not one of us is exempt from this. We all have been born with a sin nature. You do not have to teach someone to sin because the sin nature was passed down through the bloodline of Adam. We have all missed the bullseye. But amazingly enough there was a way out.

Romans 5:8 tells us, “But God commendeth his love toward us, in that, while we were yet sinners, Christ died for us.” Jesus knew about the sin in each of our lives yet chose to die for that sin. This is truly amazing.

Yes, I love that old hymn because it has become a reality in my life. How about you?
