THE FALLEN HEROES OF FAITH – LESSON 8

PAUL

Nero’s persecution of A.d. 67 targeted both Jews and Christians who were converted Jews. The two most prominent proponents of the Christian faith were the apostles Peter and Paul. Peter ruled from Jerusalem where he was captured and killed. Paul was being held in Rome as a prisoner. It is there that he would be beheaded as recorded by Tertullian.

Gregory the Great and a few other writers say that Paul was led three miles outside of Rome and executed on the left bank of the Tiber River. Abdias writes that Nero sent two of his personal esquires, Ferega and Parthemius, to bring back the confirmation of Paul’s execution. Abdias continues on to say, that when the two esquires encountered Paul preaching his final sermon, they felt convicted and asked Paul to pray for them that they might believe on Jesus and be converted. Paul told them to be baptized in the river near his sepulcher.

There is a story, or perhaps a legend, also put forth by Pope Gregory the Great whose account was written more than 500 years later. I hold it in some suspicion since the Catholic Church is known for creating traditions that are put forth as truth. He wrote that when Paul’s head was severed, it bounced three times (hardly likely) and in the spots where it bounced, three fountains appeared. The site became known as “The Three Fountains” and they built a cathedral there called the Basilica of Saint Paul Outside the Walls, honoring the Apostle.

We owe most of our doctrinal foundations of Christianity to the teachings of Paul recorded in Acts and in his fourteen epistles (if Hebrews is counted). I know of no New Testament figure that had such fervent zeal for God as Saul who became Paul. He endured much persecution, even accused wrongfully by other prominent Christian teachers. He escaped death many times, and even led people to Jesus upon his execution.

Should we not have such zeal to proclaim the gospel?

IS HATRED AN ATTRIBUTE OF GOD?

So often we hear people say that God is love, and that is absolutely true. He loves us so much that he gave us Jesus to save us from our sin. That’s the ultimate of love. He also loves us enough to discipline us when we sin.

Years ago, I preached a message on God’s hate life. A lady responded to this message with “God doesn’t hate anything.” No matter what I showed her in the scriptures where it showed what God hates, she would not change her mind. She left our church because she was convinced that God could never hate.

So, does God hate anything?   The answer to that is a definite yes. He hates sin, yet at the same time loves the sinner. Proverbs 6:16-19, says, “These six things doth the LORD hate; yea, seven are an abomination to him.” Among these seven things which God hates are a proud look. Pride was the downfall of Satan. Pride has been the downfall of many a good person. Other things he hates in this same passage are feet running to mischief and a false witness. These seem like small things, but God hates them.

You see, God gave us His word, the Bible so that we could learn what he loves and what he hates. God loves a cheerful giver. This means that whatever we do as an act of service, whether giving money or time, or help, we must do it with a cheerful heart. Our motivation should never be out of a “have to do this” attitude. We do it out of love.

God loves those that don’t love him. He gives us a free will to choose to love him or not. Unlike mankind that many times expects or demands love from others, God isn’t like that. It is our choice to love him or not. Even when we choose not to love him, he still loves us.

God hates religion but loves relationship. He wanted relationship with mankind from the very beginning and that is why He created Adam.  Was he lonely? I can’t answer that, but he wanted a relationship with someone that was made in His image. Although He hated the sin that Adam committed, He loved Adam enough to put him out of the garden so he wouldn’t eat of the tree of life and remain in a sinful state.

God has a hate life, and it comes from man’s sin. We should think about that when we choose to go our own way. God wants better for us than that. The day is coming soon where God will show his wrath on those that hate him with the destruction that takes place during the Great Tribulation, but even in that it is to bring mankind to repentance. Again, He hates the sin but loves the sinner.

So, does God have an attribute of hate? Yes. He hates sin.

PROPHETIC WORD

HALTING BETWEEN TWO OPINIONS

I would say that this is the hour that you halt between two opinions. Would you go one way or would you go the other, for there is much to come about in the days ahead. I would say that there will be a shaking unlike any shaking that has ever taken place saith the Lord. People will be shaken to the core. Faith will be stretched beyond anything it has ever seen. Would you be of the opinion to be hot, or would you be of the opinion to be cold? Those that stay in the middle will surely be spit out of my mouth. The lukewarmness of my church has come into my nostrils and it is not a smell that I want to smell. It is a stench beyond all stenches. You have been given opportunity after opportunity to repent, and the hour is at hand where you will make your final choice. Behold, I will blow a wind upon your nation and upon this earth like a wind that has never blown. I will blow away protection from those that have turned away from me, and it will blow away things that looked like they were permanent. But I would say that I raise up and I bring down. I am in the wind, and it shall do a work, but also there shall be a wind of revival that will stir up the embers of the fire that has waned. There will be a stirring and the flames will grow brighter for those that have chosen to be hot for me saith the Lord. They shall rise up from the embers and shine like they have never shone. They shall go forth and do great exploits for I am in the wind of revival, and I am in the wind of destruction of those things that I have allowed but now am disallowing them. I would say, choose this day which side that you are on. You cannot serve two masters. You are either for me all the way, or you are against me all the way. There is no longer any middle road, for the things of darkness will grow darker, and the things of light will grow brighter. Choose wisely for this is the hour that I have said would come. It is at the door and is being released saith the lord.

PROPHETIC WORD

I hear the Lord saying.. “I see you My child as you’re weary and tired but still standing in faith on the banks of The Red Sea of your life. You’re much like the Israelites of old and you’re not only at a victory point but you are also at a crucial point in your journey where it’s either fly or die. You’ve come this far and now it’s decision time. Do you dare step fearlessly into the sea ahead of you or do you go back to the old ways and old places in utter defeat and despair? The answer to you My child is much the same as to the children of Israel and that is there’s no way else for you to go but forward towards the promise I’ve given you. Yes, your promised land too is just in sight so step out on what looks to you as blind faith and know that as I parted the waters back then so will I part the waters of adversity for you today. It all starts with one step of faith in Me and what I’ve promised you. Just trust Me today and I will help you across to the other side. Yes, just know that I your Lord God will fight for you, and you shall hold your peace and you will not have to lift your hand against your foe. All you must do now is lift your voice in prayers of praise and thanksgiving for all that I’ve done and will do as you follow Me in complete obedience to My Word and to My will. Again, child I say to you as I’ve said to you many times in the past, just fear not. Oh yes even when you do not see the provision for your promised place and when it looks as if the provision will not come still just rest in Me and have no fear. For what you cannot see is that there will not only be one source for you My child to draw from but there will be many wells of water and provision for you to draw from in the place I’m leading you to. For child the places you’ve been in and are yet still in the midst of they are too confining for you and all that I’ve put in you and anointed you to be and to do. That, My little one is the reason for the lack of joy and peace you’ve been experiencing as of late. Child you’ve continually tried to make a round peg fit into a square hole and it just will not work. Yes, you’ve been much like a fish out of water trying to fit into a dry place. But now lest you become either complacent in the confusion or boastful in the bountifulness...Stop there on the shore where you stand and know that it is not you but Me who works in you and through you. I’m calling you to do what you can do only when you trust Me and become one with Me. There you must loose yourself in My Glory and allow Me to saturate you with My Presence. I’ll then begin to lead you into the promised place I prepared you for in the wilderness seasons of your life. So stay steady and keep your eyes on Me for surely there will come distractions along the way that could once again get you off course if you’re not very careful to know that it’s Me and not you. Never while walking in complete confidence of your calling can you ever confuse My anointing on you as being your own abilities and talents. Many of My chosen vessels have become casualties of their own making as they allowed foolish pride and ego to contaminate My Glory that I placed on their lives. Yes, many started out strong and with a right spirit but they soon became full of themselves caused by listening to the praises and the accolades of those around them. Stay humble My child for it was your teachable spirit that first drew Me to you. Always know you’re simply a vessel, yes a conduit for My Glory, My oil and My fire to flow through. Freely I have given to you but freely I can take away. So stay before Me and then I will lead you into the promised place I have for you My chosen and cherished child. Yes, stay strong through Me and never take credit for or glory in your own self; But glory in the fact that you know Me and walk victoriously in Me. Trust Me child through this trying time for truly your promised land in now in sight.”
