LIVING IN VICTORY
If you take time to sit down with some “old timers” you might hear some wonderful stories of their past. It is a great moment for families to learn about their ancestors. There is nothing wrong with learning about the past, but the problem for many is they get stuck in the past.
They remember all the disappointments, the hurts, the tragedies, and the times they were “the victim, instead of sharing the joys of their lives.”
I met a lady once that was in ministry. She often shared her testimony of having an abusive father. Every opportunity she had to testify she spoke about this abuse but never spoke about the victory that comes through Jesus when one forgives. She was stuck in the past, and each time she shared her testimony it was as if the abuse happened all over again. She never changed her story.
We are instructed in Philippians 3:13 to “…forget[ting] those things which are behind…” We are to leave the hurts at the altar with Jesus and refuse to think on them again. True forgiveness also forgets. This is not easy when one has been abused or hurt deeply. Yet, if we do not forgive and let it go, we cannot move forward.
Many are sick and do not realize that it may be because they are stuck in the past, in the hurt that happened and have not forgiven the offender. When we ask God to forgive us, he casts our sin into the sea of forgetfulness and never remembers them.
Since God is our example to live by, then we must choose to forgive others and cast their sin also into the sea of forgetfulness and be determined to not bring up their failures again. Yes, we can testify that we went through the hurts, but our testimony should be from the victory side and not the victim side. If we stay in the “victim side” then we have not truly forgiven.
Forgiveness is a choice, just like a healthy diet is a choice. If you truly have forgiven, then you must refuse to think on the past hurts, leaving it with Jesus. You can do this through the love of Jesus, and that is the only way to move forward.
When your thoughts are no longer controlled by the offenses of the past, then you are living in victory.
