It's time to speak up. The Maryland Legislature is considering HB679, a bill that would prohibit licensed health care practitioners from prescribing or providing cross-sex hormone therapy to minors for the treatment of gender-related mental health conditions.


Informed Choice Maryland (ICM) supports HB679 because minors are not legally or developmentally capable of consenting to life-altering medical interventions with permanent consequences. Decisions involving irreversible physical changes should not be made based on mental health or endocrine dysfunction diagnoses during adolescence.


Legislators pay close attention when constituents reach out — especially when messages are personalized. This is your opportunity to speak up.

• Minors cannot legally consent to most significant medical or contractual decisions.
  
• Cross-sex hormone therapy can have irreversible effects, including impacts on fertility and long-term health.
  
• Adolescence is a period of rapid psychological and physical development.
  
• Parents should not be pressured into making permanent medical decisions for children experiencing mental health distress.
  
• Safeguarding children from irreversible medical interventions is a legitimate and appropriate role for the Legislature.

You don’t need to copy these word-for-word. Pick 2–3, or rewrite them in your own voice (personalization matters most):

• I support HB679 because minors are not old enough to consent to irreversible medical interventions.
  
• Medical treatments that permanently alter a child’s body should not be administered based on mental health struggles during adolescence.
  
• Protecting children from long-term medical harm is an appropriate role for state law.
  
• This bill provides a necessary safeguard while children mature into adulthood.
