SUSAN BILLY studied basket weaving with her great-aunt, world renowned Pomo basket weaver Elsie Allen, for 16 years. D-Q University, Davis),awarded her an Associate of Arts degree in Native American Studies for this work. Born in Hot Springs, South Dakota, Susan moved to Hopland in 1971 to learn about her native heritage. She is a tribal member of the Hopland Band of Pomo Indians. Her father, Ignatius L. Billy was a full-blooded member of Hopland Rancheria.
 
Susan has participated in many native cultural and community events and has traveled all over the country as a Native American artist, speaker, demonstrator and curator at the Grace Hudson Museum, American Museum of Natural History, Oakland Museum, DeYoung Museum, Brooklyn Museum and National Museum of the American Indian. A founding member of the California Indian Basketweaverʼs Association, she is co-author of Remember Your Relations: the Elsie Allen Baskets, Family & Friends.
 
SUSAN BILLY is currently sole proprietor of Bead Fever in Ukiah, where her daughter and granddaughter are following in her creative footsteps.
