Black History Month is an annual celebration of achievements by African Americans and a time for recognizing their central role in U.S. history. Also known as African American History Month, the event grew out of “Negro History Week,” the brainchild of noted historian Carter G. Woodson and other prominent African Americans. Since 1976, every U.S. president has officially designated the month of February as Black History Month. Other countries around the world, including Canada and the United Kingdom, also devote a month to celebrating Black history. | |

Susan Lindgren School Community requests no Valentine's
Store Bought or Handmade Valentine's.
On Valentine's Day our school community does not exchange cards or have classroom celebrations . Please do not purchase or make cards for your child to pass out at school to their classmates. We know that each family may have their own traditions connected to this day at home, but at school we do not. As always, we value friendships and caring for each other every day. Thank you for your support and cooperation.

Save the Date: Silent Auction
Saturday, March 16 - Friday, March 22, 2024
| | |
The Susan Lindgren PTO will host its second annual Online Silent Auction! Last year's auction was so fun and a great success, raising over $10,000!
In addition to the full calendar of PTO events and initiatives already occurring each year, last year's auction proceeds allowed the PTO to support even more activities this year including: adding the Fall Festival, increase funds for additional class field trips and in-school experiences, and supporting our school community with winter gear, funds for milks at lunch, and other school requests as needed.
Families will have a chance to donate to the auction, as well as bid on a variety of items or experiences once it goes live on March 16.
Items could include anything from:
- gift certificates to local restaurants, a basket of homemade scones, tickets to local sporting events, personalized watercolor painting, themed baskets (coffee, games, cooking, etc), a weekend stay at a cabin, or private tour to a local brewery!
Experiences (hosted by and for SL families) might include:
- attend a family kickball and pizza night, glowball party for the whole family, donuts at the park with classmates, adults wine and whiskey night, or an afternoon ice skating at the ROC.
Donated items are now accepted online!
We need your help to make the auction a success! You can now donate an item or experiences directly online!
-Do you, a family member, or friend have a cabin?
-Do you have an interesting job you can share? A tour?
-Do you have season tickets to a local athletic team?
-Do you have a neighbor/friend/relative with an interesting connection or hobby?
-Do you have a special skill you can share?
-Have an idea but not sure how it can be used? Reach out and we can brainstorm something together.
You can submit your donated item or experience directly on the auction website, sle.betterworld.org/donate-an-item.
Parents, teachers, and staff donated items and experiences that contributed $5,794 to last year's auction- over half of the total raised!
Contact susanlindgrenpto@gmail.com with any questions.

Be SMART: A message about proper gun storage and safety
St. Louis Park Public Schools is teaming up with Be SMART to share an important message about proper gun storage and safety.
Last year, more than 350 children in the U.S. gained access to a firearm and unintentionally shot themselves or someone else. In 2021, 22 Minnesotans under the age of 18 were killed by guns, and more than 1,700 guns were stolen across our state that year. When guns are not properly stored, tragedy can strike.
We ask that you consider following the Be SMART message in your home. It emphasizes the importance of secure gun storage. Consider secure gun storage as an important step you can take to help protect your family, school and community.
Here’s what Be SMART stands for:
Secure all guns in your homes and vehicles.
Model responsible behavior around guns.
Ask about unsecured guns in other homes.
Recognize the role of guns in suicide.
Tell your peers to Be SMART.
Research shows that secure storage plays a vital role in reducing the risk of gun violence. Preventing children from accessing unsecured firearms is required by Minnesota law.
In addition to following the Be SMART message, you can take action by:
-
Learning more at besmartforkids.org
-
Watching and sharing the Be SMART educational video
-
Sharing Be SMART resources and materials
Thank you for reading this important safety message and for being a partner with us in helping to keep our kids, schools and communities safe.
