Wear Your Words Wednesdays - Honoring Ms. Kim Carden
With the death of Kim Carden, our beloved friend, colleague, mentor and amazing educator, our school team wants to honor her by continuing "Wear Your Words Wednesday!" for the rest of the school year. Ms. Carden loved literacy, books, writing and words, and over the years brought it to life in her Kindergarten classroom.
Our school team will be wearing shirts with the pink "love" image above next Wednesday, January 12th in celebration of Ms. Carden. We encourage all students to join us in wearing shirts with words on them each and every Wednesday. Let's continue to share the love in our school! We love you Kim and miss you so much!
I want to personally thank each and every person and/or family that has reached out and shared your care, love and thoughts with our school community. The entire school team so appreciates your kindness and support.
We could not do the wonderful things we do at our school without all of you and your never-ending support. We are a village and family for all of our 433 learners!

PTO Meeting: Learning About Kids and Grief, and Remembering Ms. Kim Carden
Tuesday, January 11, 2022, 7:00–8:15 p.m., over Zoom
Prompted by the death of beloved kindergarten teacher Kim Carden, at our upcoming PTO meeting we will be talking about how kids grieve the loss of someone close to them. Susan Lindgren parent Beth Shapiro is a licensed social worker and psychotherapist who focuses on child and adolescent development and behavior. She will be speaking about what grief looks and feels like for children and how parents can support their children going through this process. Susan Lindgren social worker, Michelle Bryant, will also speak on this issue and tell about efforts happening at school to support students who may be grieving.
Don't forget! We are collecting thoughts, memories and photos of Kim Carden to create a slide show to share at the meeting. If your child had Ms. Carden as a teacher, send a brief story, memory, positive thought about her class, photo, or short video of your student sharing a memory to the PTO email address, susanelindgren@gmail.com, by Friday, January 7.
As always, we will have school updates from Principal Pollock and a chance for parents to ask questions. We looking forward to seeing you there. Here is the Zoom link:
The Student Directory is coming!
The PTO is once again creating an online student directory. Our hope is that it will help families and students make connections with each other! But we need your help to make sure it's accurate and useful. Please verify your family listing is correct in the Online Directory by Friday, January 14. The directory is only accessible to Susan Lindgren families and YOU get to choose what contact information you’d like visible. Here’s what you need to do:
1. Login to or create your directory account on the PTO website. (If you are creating a new account, you must use the email address on file with the school district, otherwise your family record will not be found.)
2. Make sure your family contact information is correct, make any updates if necessary.
3. Decide what contact info you'd like to publish. That’s it!
Our directory uses an opt-out process. All families will be included unless you notify PTO that you would like to opt-out. If you wish to opt-out of the directory entirely, please let us know by sending an email to susanelindgren@gmail.com by Friday, January 14. Be sure to include parent/guardian and student name(s). The directory will be made available on Monday, January 16 with all family contacts (except those who have notified us to opt-out).

Family Drop off and Pick Up Process
|
|
The snow and the cold make parent pick up and drop off a more interesting time of the day. You are one of over 200 cars that are trying to get their child to school on time or get somewhere right after school. Please pull all the way forward especially when directed by staff so that we can accommodate as many vehicles as possible. Please set your cell phone aside and pay attention to traffic. When you get to the 4 way stop at Quentin and 41st, have your child put on their mask, coat, etc so they are ready to hop out when you arrive at school. There is no parking across the street. Thank you!

COVID Tests Available for Students and Staff
|
|
Additional rapid-result COVID antigen tests have been ordered and are now available at sites. Tests can be requested at the front office of a student’s school or staff’s primary work location. The newest test that has become available is the BD Veritor nasal swab test. One test kit (containing two tests) may be requested at a time. BD Veritor tests are app enabled and require a smartphone and internet connection. An alternative test option will be supplied to families that do not have access to a smartphone and internet connection.
Students that are not enrolled in St. Louis Park Public schools such as siblings, relatives, children of staff, will need to request a test from their school/school district or leverage other testing resources. Relatives of staff will also need to leverage local testing resources. More information on community testing options are listed below. Please contact Flower Krutina, krutina.flower@slpschools.org, with questions.
What is the BD Veritor antigen rapid test?
The BD Veritor nasal swab at-home test is a rapid antigen test that can be used by anyone over the age of two. Each kit includes two tests per box. In order to take the test, you are required to download the Scanwell Health App on an iPhone, Samsung Galaxy or Google Pixel smartphone. The app will guide you through the testing process and will take about 20 minutes to complete.

|
|
Please remember students go outside for recess every day! Make sure they have outdoor clothing. Label all clothing.
Students will always go outside unless the regular temperature is below 0 degrees or the windchill temperature is -10 degrees or below. We will watch the temperature to keep our students safe.
We are always in need of gently used or new winter gear, especially waterproof mittens/gloves.
