SLP High School Student Action Research Project
Susan Lindgren Parents & Guardians,

As part of an Independent Study course at St. Louis Park High School, a small group of High School students are co-creating and conducting an action research project on youth sports in SLP. The course is facilitated by SLP Athletic Director Andrew Ewald along with a team of staff, and focuses on the following question: “What barriers to joining youth sports currently exist for elementary students and families in SLP?” The study sub-question is: “What role might race play?” As part of this project, the students want to gather youth and family voices on how they perceive and interact with youth sports opportunities. The goal of the research is to provide recommendations on how to increase accessibility to youth sports in our community.

As part of the project, the High School students have chosen to spend time in elementary school physical education classes to get to know the youth and learn about their experiences in physical education and sports. A pair of High School students will visit your child’s physical education class for a couple of weeks starting the week of March 21. While there, the older students will assist in class activities and build rapport with the younger students. In addition, data will be collected, likely in the form of youth interviews and surveys. The specifics of data collection will be developed by the Independent Study students in the coming weeks, and if your child is selected to interview, you will be provided with detailed information and the opportunity to provide your consent. Students may also ask you to provide your perspective through an interview or survey.

We are very excited about this opportunity for all of our students and are thrilled to support this youth-driven action research that can improve our community. Please let me know if you have any questions or concerns.

Sincerely,
Andy Ewald
